Transparency in peace talks must: UML Gen Secy

Post Report

KATHMANDU, Feb 7 : Madhav Kumar Nepal, the general secretary of the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist-Leninist (CPN-UML), speaking at a press conference today demanded transparency in the Maoist-government talks.

"The nitty-gritty of the talks should be made public," said Nepal, who was re-elected as the general secretary of CPN-UML for the second term by the party’s seventh general convention Thursday.

Nepal urged that the bottom line for talks must be decided before entering into a formal negotiation process.

Nepal admitted that he had a telephonic conversation with Prachanda, the chairman of the Nepal Communist Party (Maoist). Prachanda wants participation of all political parties to reach a peaceful solution, according to Nepal.

"Prachanda has urged that the current process should not be disrupted." He is also in favour of national reconciliation, added Nepal. However, he demanded that the Maoists should clarify their stance on constituent assembly, interim government and round table meeting.

On the occasion, he reiterated UML’s commitment to constitutional monarchy and multi-party democracy. "If democracy comes under threat from any corner, UML is determined to safeguard it at any cost," Nepal said.

He also repeated UML’s demand for the formation of government under Article 128 of the constitution but said that the party has kept all the possible options open to resolve the current impasse.
