Security personnel, Maoists on the run to win over public

Post Report

ROLPA, Feb 8  : The tight security earlier maintained by the security personnel in Rolpa, the district where the Maoist insurgency originated, has been relaxed following the declaration of a truce by the government and the Maoists, with armed Maoist cadres moving freely in the villages and the security personnel not hindering them. Presently, both sides are busy trying to gain the confidence of a badly shaken public.

Several check-posts set up around Liwang, the district headquarters have been reduced and the patrolling by the security personnel has also been limited to Liwang.

Residents of the district are somewhat pleased to note the sudden change in the attitude of the security personnel. "The security personnel have changed. They are less harsh and now speak very politely," said a local resident.

Prakash Adhikari, the Deputy Superintendent of Police, attributed the new mood among the security personnel on recent training methods, saying, "The police now have been trained in human rights and law".

On the other hand even the Maoists are wooing the public. They are conducting open discussions with the locals to be acquainted with public sentiments. They have been seen to lay their arms aside as they enjoy themselves playing volleyball and interacting with the people.

Meanwhile, various organisations in Rolpa have underlined the need for the dialogue between the government and the rebels to reach a decisive point so as to prevent further devastation of the impoverished nation.
