Kathmandu humble Tribhuvan University

KATHMANDU, Feb 9 : Opener Sandeep Shrestha hammered a swash-buckling century as Kathmandu humbled Tribhuvan University (TU) by 157 runs in the Region No 3 Cricket Selection tournament on Sunday.

In the match played at Tribhuvan University Cricket Ground, Kathmandu elected to bat first and scored 277 runs for the loss of seven wickets in the allotted 40 overs. Shrestha carted the TU bowlers to every corner of the ground to score 104 runs off mere 83 balls. He hit 13 fours and six sixers in his hurricane knock. Bardan Chalise also made crisp 56 runs off 55 balls. Raju Basnet (34) and Kiran Rana (16) increased the tempo in the later part of the innings. Purushottam Bhattarai and Bibhusan Pant bagged two wickets each for TU.

Set to make imposing 278 runs, TU batsmen caved in to precise Kathmandu bowling and were bowled out for just 120 runs in 31.3 overs. Pramod Basnet wrecked havoc in TU innings claiming the top three batsmen in his spell of six overs conceding just 19 runs. Kalam Ali and Kiran Rana chipped in with two wickets. Bhattarai shone with the bat as well for TU to gather 46 runs as rest of the batsmen failed to impress.

In another match, Nuwakot edged out Bhaktapur by three wickets in a thrilling match. Bhaktapur compiled 119 runs in 29.5 overs after electing to bat first. Maheshwore Shrestha made 52 runs to play lone hand in Bhaktapur innings as other batsmen faltered. Pramesh Gurung bagged three wickets for Nuwakot while Anit Amatya and Rakesh Singh claimed two wickets each.

Chasing a modest target of 120 runs in 40 overs Nuwakot survived some anxious moments before winning the match in 35 overs for the loss of seven wickets. Nagendra Bhattarai guided Nuwakot to victory with a patient knock of 48 runs. Gaurav Pokhrel and Amir Raj Upadhyaya bagged two wickets apiece for Bhaktapur.

In Dharan, Saptari thrashed Siraha by eight wickets in a match of Region No 1.

Siraha were bowled out for just 96 runs in 32.2 overs after electing to bat first. Bijaya Niraula (14) and Anish Shrestha (10) were the main contributors for Siraha in their dismal batting performance. Ayush Shrestha claimed five wickets for Saptari while Mehboob Alam bagged two.

Chasing the meagre total of 97 runs in the allotted 50 overs, Alam hammered Siraha into submission hitting 67 runs off just 27 balls. Jagannath Shah remained unbeaten on 11 runs as Saptari reached the target for the loss of two wickets.
