Sham
democracy
The article entitled
"Power of capital in politics", dated 13/2/ 2003, TKP was very relevant in the
context of contemporary national and international politics. The so-called present system,
democracy, which we are experiencing in Nepal, is in fact sham democracy. As the writer
refers to UP politics, he failed to highlight the political mess, especially in Pakistan,
Bangladesh, India and Nepal. More or less our system is similar. But our leaders, who
handle issues and understand them, appear much poorer in terms of experience and their
roles than those of other South Asian leaders. They have leaders with criminal records who
threaten those who attempt to grab power.
He missed other three
most important factors, which contribute to sham democracy in third world countries. After
capital (money), there are mind (criminal minded people), muscle (including goons and
guns) and media, which help political leaders win elections. So, the sham democracy is
combined of mind, money, media and muscle power. Any person, who is in possession of these
four things and can use, misuse and abuse four things during his election campaigns, he or
she will win elections and become the master of the people, no matter how bad his or her
past records are.
