Schools without roofs

This refers to a news story titled "Students forced to study under open sky," dated February 22, 2003, TKP. On the eve of Education Day, the story of a school at Khotang published in your daily really touched my heart. Not that the government has done many things to restore Maoist burnt or destroyed schools but that the handpicked government has failed even to realise that there are children living in remote parts of this country who need proper school buildings.

The roof of Basanta Panchami School in Khotang district was blown by the violent storm and the district education office did not feel the need to repair it. The repairing part has been left for the parents. But they pay land revenue to the government.

I think the government, which pledges to provide education for all, should have realised the need and subsequently rebuilt the school because it cannot expect the poor and illiterate parents to understand the value of education.

If the government can direct the development fund for security and defence department still seeks more capital to feed the lazy army personnel, who should have restored peace and safeguarded the country but failed to even defend their own barracks, then why not to child education?
