Samrat Sporting Club, Pokhara register wins

KATHMANDU, Feb 26 : The second phase of the Khukuri Gold Cup Football tournament kicked off Wednesday at three centres with win for Samrat Sporting Club in Biratnagar, Pokhara Club in Pokhara and Banke-XI in Nepalgunj.

In Biratnagar, local side Samrat Sporting Club demolished Mai Valley Club of Ilam 5-1 to the delight of the home crowd. Samrat scored three goals in the first half and added two in the second maintaining firm control throughout the match.

Sunil Thapamagar headed home the first for Samrat in the 16th minute after Binod Lama supplied a perfect pass to him at the centre from the wing. Roshan Lama of Mai Valley brought the match at level in the 23rd minute but four minutes later Sal Bahadur Dhimal scored a header to put the match at 2-1 in favour of Samrat.

Deepak KC made it 3-1 in the 34th minute in counter-attack. KC doubled his personal tally in the 65th minute and Prakash Karki sealed the match in the 74th minute. Country’s ‘A’ division club Kathmandu Club will take on Lalbandi Sporting Club while Boys Union will meet Unique Club of Bara on Thursday.

In Pokhara, Pokhara Club made a perfect start as they thrashed Chyasal Club of Lalitpur 5-1 in the curtain raiser. Rajkumar Shrestha scored the first goal for Pokhara in the 15th minute followed by Anil Gurung’s goal in the 34th minute. In the second half, Prakash Gurung struck twice in the 55th minute and 80th minute while Manoj Gurung scored a goal in the 64th minute.

In Nepalgunj, Model Club Banke edged Himalayan Club, Saptari 5-4 in tiebreaker. The match went for penalty shoot-out after both the teams failed to break the 0-0 deadlock in the regulation as well as the added extra time. Modern converted all the spotkicks while Himalayan captain Saj Kumar Ale misfired the spot kick as Model Club clinched the match.
