7 dead in Mahottari, Saptari districts; flights cancelled

RAJBIRAJ, Jan 12:As cold wave continues to affect life in eastern Terai districts, the death toll has mounted to seven - five in Mahottari and two in Saptari district.

With the death of Bishwo Nath Jha, 75, of Ekhariya village development committee (VDC) in Mahottari district, the death toll has reached five. Four people from Sadha and Bhawanipatti VDCs had died earlier.

Likewise, according to reports, 60-year-old Satouni Choudhary from Sahashrabahu Village Development Committee (VDC) and 57-year-old Sakaldev Das from Rajbiraj Municipality in Saptari district died due to cold wave yesterday.

According to a report from Damak (Jhapa), one person identified as Purna Bahadur Darji, 40, from Keurenipani VDC of Bhojpur district, died in Pathari of Morang district. Darji is the third person to succumb to the more than two-week-old cold wave in the district. With this latest death, the toll due to cold wave in the Terai belt of the country has crossed 23.

Similarly, the continuing bad weather in the plain district of Bara further deteriorated today, forcing airlines to cancel today’s flights to and from Simara.

Another report from Bara said that all the flights reaching the Simara Airport were cancelled due to bad weather, resulting to low visibility.

Today’s temperature in the district has been recorded at minimum one degree Celsius and maximum 10 degree Celsius. The district had cold wave for four days in the last year’s winter but it has continued for 25 days, showing no sign of improvement yet.

Hospital sources said that the number of patients suffering from the cold is growing gradually. Besides, the cold wave has deteriorated winter crops badly. Even the government offices, transportation and educational institutions have been affected due to the continuous bad weather.

People were seen sitting near the fire at public places to keep the cold away.
