Hillary, Tabei to attend Everest golden jubilee

KATHMANDU, Jan 17  ; The forthcoming gathering of Mount Everest summiteers is expected to receive wide coverage with a surge of interest by the international media, including the BBC and the National Geographic Society in the mega-event, Ang Chhring Sherpa, President of the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) and organiser of the event told the press here yesterday.

According to Sherpa, the two-day meeting of the summiteers, to be held on 28 and 29th May 2003, as the part of the Mount Everest Golden Jubilee Celebrations (MEJC) is expected to be attended by world-famous climbers like Sir Edmund Hillary and Ms. Junko Tabei. While Hillary will be in Kathmandu, his son Peter will host a dinner party at Thangboche, located at 3,860 metres for fellow climbers, on the foothills of Everest. Besides, 150 foreigners, 200 Nepalese are expected to take part.

The record-holding Everest climbers, Appa Sherpa and Ang Rita Sherpa are also expected to make fresh attempts on the summit.

The Mount Everest Golden Jubilee Celebrations was started by Nepal Tourism Board under the Destination Nepal Campaign 2002-2003 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the historic ascent of Mount Everest by late Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Edmund Hillary in 1953.

The celebrations are going on since June 2002, with a series of adventure and sports events for both internal and external tourists, to develop Nepal as an adventure-cum-sport destination.

The sporting and adventure events include rock-climbing competition, the Everest marathon and the Himalayan Mountain Bike race. These will be accompanied by a film/documentary exhibition, international invitational golf festival, football tournament, mountain-biking and bowling tournament in the May event.

About 1200 foreign and Nepalese have scaled the highest peak till date and Sherpa climbers outnumber foreigners. Over a dozen expedition teams have applied with the Nepalese government for permission to climb the mountain on the anniversary.
