Worrisome

Thank you very much for the news-item published in TKP (21/1/2003) titled "Experts call for liberal organ transplant" by Perina Pathak. Being a renal transplant recipient and a student, I have written a number of articles and reported news-stories about the issue mostly in Nepali newspapers. I am now worried on the response made by the spokesman of the Ministry of Health, Dr Benu Bahadur Karki, and the chairman of Organ Transport Committee, Dr Biswo Raj Dali.

The spokesman in fact failed to recall what his Ministry previously gave words to the patients. Does the Ministry begin its work from zero if it gets every new leadership? Likewise, Dr Dali was of the opinion that there is an "urgent need" to assess the law to permit transplantation. I do not understand what does "urgent need" mean? How long does it take again? Most importantly, who were responsible for the inclusion of restrictive provisions and what about distrust expressed by Dr Arun K Singh? He was of the view that weakness in the law could be purposely left in, so that corrupt specialists could benefit, maybe the doctors are lured by the commission when they refer patients abroad.

I hope more reports will appear about the pain of the patients as well.
