Nepal ranks 100th in quality motherhood

KATHMANDU, June 9 : Nepal ranks 100th country, where mother and children get the better facilities and enjoy healthy and quality life, revealed a report prepared by Save the Children, an international relief and development organisation working in 45 countries.

According to the report, among Nepal’s neighbours, India ranks 89th and China 38th in the ‘State of the World’s Mother 2003'. Similarly Bangladesh ranks 95th while Pakistan ranks 99th.

Sweden, Denmark and Norway top the list of the best countries for mothers, while USA ranks 11th.

The report was released on May 11 to mark the Mother’s Day. The report also refutes the general notion that high incomes guarantee better deal to women.

The US per capita income is more than $34,140 which is higher than that of Sweden, Denmark and Norway, which have per capita income of $24,277, $27,627 and $29,918 respectively.

This Mother’s index specifically focuses on the quality life of mothers using six indicators to ranks countries according to their performance in terms of facilities for motherhood. The indicators are safe deliveries, health parameters of pregnant women, percentage of women using modern contraceptives, adult female literacy rate and participation of women in national government.

Sweden, Denmark and Norway including Switzerland score high on all the above indicators while countries like Angola, Mali, Sierra Leone, Yemen, Ethiopia and Nigeria come at the bottom of the table.
