Gross violation

This refers to Bikash Thapa’s news story "Mahalisagar bund construction over", dated June 17, 2003, TKP.

India gives a damn to a small sovereign country whenever it intends to construct dams or barrages or bunds near the border across those rivers, which flow through Nepal. It is not surprising to read such stories on your daily paper as such unilateral construction takes place almost every year. And I do not understand why the political leaders like GP Koirala, Madhav Kumar Nepal and Sher Bahadur Deuba do not raise their voice against India.

I wonder how the newly installed Surya Bahadur Thapa government reacts, if at all, to this unilateral Indian construction of Mahalisagar bund. India will do its utmost to see to it that Nepal does not raise any objection to India’s violation of mutual understanding between India and Nepal on water resources.

Any lapses on the part of the authorities on both sides of the border will have a boomerang effect on both. Therefore, they cannot be ignored.

Nar Prasad Niraula,
Ghattekulo, Kathmandu
