RCT put behind MMC blow to beat Boys’ Union

Post Report

KATHMANDU, June 18 : Rani Pokhari Corner Team (RCT) put behind a 6-0 humiliation by Manang Marsyangdi Club (MMC) last week to beat Boys’ Union Club 3-1 in the Martyr’s Memorial ANFA San Miguel League held at the Dashrath Stadium today.

Madhu Karki, Rajkumar Shrestha and Deepak Limbu fired home for three-time league champions in the match while Sunil Subedi netted a consolation for Boys’ Union. In contrary to the scoreline, the match was a closely-contested affair and it was Boys’ Union  who kept tremendous pressure over fallen giants throughout. RCT are equal with MPC and Friends’ Club acquiring  six points in three matches while Boys’ Union have one win and two losses under their belt so far.

"A momentary lapse of concentration proved expensive otherwise I rank today’s match as ours," Boys Union coach Rajesh KC told The Kathmandu Post. "I am very happy with the way my boys played today especially at the back and mid against one of the favourites side in the league," he added. The coach was a bit worried at the front as Boys’ Union missed two great chances to score in the first half. "We are looking to strengthen our forward line in our next match 10 days later." There is four days gap in the league starting from June 20.

RCT that went down 6-0 against MMC and escaped with a 1-0 win over second from the
bottom Boys’ Sports never looked comfortable against fourth from the bottom Boys’ Union. The football powerhouse had to wait till 40th minute when their captain Madhu Karki struck a superb freekick from 25-yard away.

Veteran Ramesh Gyawali and Harihar Thapa along with experienced Rajkumar Shrestha and Deepak Limbu squandered several good chances earlier to force the captain to take the freekick when Sagar Ghimire brought down Deepak Limbu at the right side of the box. Karki’s curling freekick beat Boys’ Union goalie Deepak Dongol and kissed the back of the net for a precious 1-0 lead. Karki had scored a crucial freekick against Mahendra Police Club (MPC) in the quarterfinal of the Khukuri Cup last month.

RCT had another close look in the 56th minute but Sagar Ghimire put the Suk Bahadur Gurung’s powerful strike outside the touch-line. But a minute later, RCT netted their second after goalie Dangol committed a mistake while saving Dilli Ram Poudel’s freekick from the right. Rajkumar Shrestha raced towards the ball and fired it past Dangol.

Boys’ Union’s young team put all their effort to bring the match at level and duly reduced the deficit by 2-1 in the 62nd minute when Surendra Sikhrakar awarded them a spotkick. Captain Karki brought down second half substitute Utsav KC unnecessarily inside the box prompting Sikhrakar to point at the spot without any hesitation. Boys’ Union striker Sunil Subedi took the charge and converted his second goal of the league.

Boys’ Union tried hard in the later part of the match but couldn’t succeed. Utsav KC
missed a golden opportunity to bring the match at level in the 36th minute when he struck a point blank shot straight at the hands of RCT goalkeeper Dilip Chettri.

In their desperate attempt to net an equaliser, Boys’ Union players advanced up field and exposed their defense. RCT midfielder Deepak Limbu, who had a disastrous day Wednesday, compensated his earlier mistakes netting an injury time goal as RCT won the match 3-1. Limbu drove the ball from the mid and dribbled past two Boys’ Union defenders before dodging goalie Dangol to confirm RCT’s second win in the league.
