Big guns continue to hold sway in Khukuri Cup

POKHARA, Feb 28: Capital’s ‘A’ division clubs continued their dominance in Khukuri Cup second round as New Road Team (NRT) and Boys Sports Club recorded convincing wins on Friday.

In the second round match held at Pokhara Stadium, NRT thrashed Panchthar 4-1 to enter the quarterfinals. Kailash Khadki showed his class after striking as early as in the eighth minute of the match. But minnow Panchthar did well to stop the flurry of goals till the half time.

In the second half, NRT added three goals demonstrating their superiority. Little Hari Thakuri scored in the 50th minute followed by a goal from Sundar Nepal in the 60th minute. Jiban Sinkaman completed the final rites in the 82nd minute giving his team a comfortable win in their first appearance. Panchthar Raju Tamang came up with injury time consolation.

In the second match, Boys Sports bounced back from a goal down to beat Dhanusa’s Mithila Club 4-1. Mithila took the lead through Jitendra Singh’s strike but Uddab Gautam erased the lead three minutes later. Khadga Aale made it 2-1 in the 37th minute. Boys’ Sports added two more in the second half through the double strike of Raju Maharjan in the 57th and 76th minute.

In Nepalgunj, Rani Pokhari Corner Team (RCT) thrashed Friendship Club of Surkhet. RCT veteran Ramesh Gyawali netted two goals in the match while Suk Bahadur Gurung and Aita Singh Tamang added one each for the winners. The other goal was the own goal from Shyam Thapa. Friendship club’s striker Pralad BC netted both the goals scored by the local club in the second half.

In the second match of the day, United Club of Birtamode, Jhapa stormed back in the match from a goal down to pull a 3-1 win over FC Internet, Makwanpur. Birendra Rai of FC Internet scored in the 23rd minute but a double blow from Prem Subba and a goal from Kumar Subba saw Jhapa winning the match comfortably.

In Biratnagar, mighty Mahendra Police Club (MPC) registered a biggest score win in the tournament so far over The Sprout Group, Sindhupalchowk as they defeated the minnows 12-0. MPC striker duo Hari Khadka and Ramesh Budhathoki recorded hattricks in their first match of the tournament. Likewise, youngster Jumanu Rai netted two goals while Raju Katuwal, Rakesh Shrestha, Ananta Thapa and Raju Pulami scored a goal apiece for MPC.

Likewise, in the second closely contested match of the day, Three Star Club had to toil hard to earn a 3-1 victory over Dhankutta’s SD Club. Prabesh Katuwal opened Three Star’s account in the 24th minuet and Narendra Limbu doubled the lead in the 31st minute. Dhankutta reduced the deficit in the 66th minute when Prem Lamsal directed the ball inside Three Star’s net. But Surendra Tamang confirmed there would not be any surprise after scoring in the 69th minute to seal the match 3-1. Samrat Sporting Club of Morang will take on Kathmandu Club while Lumbini Sports Club meets Boudha Football Club on Saturday.
