Generous pensions

With regard to Yam Bahadur Gurung’s letter (Sheer discrimination, February 25, 2003, TKP), I would like to ask just one question on behalf of myself and I am sure many others who may also second me.

Why is it that so many young Nepali men desperately wish to join the British Gurkhas if it is practising racial and other forms of discrimination? I am sure the successful recruits are well aware of the terms and conditions of service and know how lucky they and their families are, especially regarding the fact that they will get a pension at the end of their service. There are not many occupations in Nepal where you receive a pension, or such a generous one!

I have a high regard for the British Gurkhas, as do most British people, and they are renowned throughout the world. I hope the British Gurkha regiments continue as they are a credit to Nepal where the majority of people show great strength and fight to survive on a daily basis.
