NRT, MPC enter semis in emphatic fashion

Post Report

POKHARA, Mar 2 : New Road Team (NRT) stormed into the semi-final of the Khukuri Cup second leg here on Sunday with a convincing 5-0 win over United Football Club (UFC) Palpa.

In what turned out to be a one-sided affair from the outset, NRT took the lead when striker Kalyan Khadgi scored as early as in the second minute. They put relentless pressure on Palpa to go into half-time with a healthy 3-0 lead.

In the 10th minute Binal Karki netted the team’s second and Kalyan Khadgi got his second and the team’s third in the 27th minute.

The second was very much the same story with Palpa continually forced onto the backfoot. And NRT were soon back to their goalscoring habit as Ramesh Sikeman struck a minute into the second half to extend the lead to 4-0. Amir Dangol nailed the final nail on the Palpa coffin scoring in the 76th minute to complete morale boosting 5-0 win.

In the day’s other match, Siraha Youth Club squeezed past Romario Boys of Kavre on penalties. Siraha beat Kavre 3-2 in the tiebreaker after the teams were deadlocked at 2-2.

It was Kavre who went in front in the 21st minute through Binod Tamrakar. Two minutes later, he doubled his and team’s score when he found the net.

However, Siraha fought their way back into the game scoring in the 25th and 30th minutes to restore the parity. Shyam Singh narrowed the deficit to 2-1 and Bipin Karmacharya scored the equaliser.

In Biratnagar

Mahendra Police Club (MPC) thrashed Boys Union Club 6-0 to book their place in the last four and qualified for the final leg due to be held in the capital.

MPC were in complete command right from the word go in the match played at the local Martyrs Stadium. Striker Hari Khadka was on target in the 11th minute to put the police outfit 2-0 up.

Apart from sporadic counterattacks, Boys Union were overwhelmed by MPC’s relentless attacks and soon finding themselves in deep trouble. They moved 4-0 up by the time the referee blew his whistle for the half time break. Kishore Subba scored in the 20th minute, Raju Pulami netted in the 35th minute.

MPC hardly showed any mercy on poor Boys Union defence in the second half and added two more goals in the session.

In the 75th minute, Ramesh Budhathoki converted a well-measured passed from Dev Narayan Chaudhary into goal for a commanding 5-0 win. And even defender Rakesh Shrestha was among the goals when he headed home in the flagkick towards the close of the match to complete a superb 6-0 victory.

In Nepalgunj

Rani Pokhari Corner Team (RCT) posted a 2-0 win over Naxal Yuva Mandal to clinch a semi-final berth of the competition.

Regardless of the final result, the quarterfinal match played at the Mahendra Stadium saw some enterprising football from both the teams.

It was only in the second session that Naxal gradually faded away and RCT took charge of the proceedings.

Veteran Ramesh Gyawali put RCT into the lead in the 70th minute while Ayit Singh Tamang sealed the fate of Naxal scoring the second four minute from time.

Meanwhile, Tikapur Youth Club, Kailali beat Udayapur Youth Club 1-0 in the other match.

The decisive goal came in the 34th minute from Ayodhya Chaudhary
