Army, Police advance in contrasting fashion

Post Report

POKHARA, March 5: Royal Nepal Army’s Tribhuvan Club bounced back from a goal down to enter the final of the Khukuri Cup second round beating New Road Team (NRT) 2-1 in a hard-fought semifinal played at the Pokhara Stadium on Wednesday.

NRT failed to capitalise on their 5th minute lead as in-form army scored two second half goals to seal the match in style. Hari Thakuri put NRT ahead in the 5th minute after a good work from the wing by Sundar Nepal. The break talks worked wonders for Tribhuvan Club as Shiva Choudhary fired home an equaliser just a couple of minute after the break. Army team confirmed their win when striker Bishow Bairag Samal struck the killer blow in the 75th minute. Dharan Club, Sunsari will take ANFA Academy in the second semifinal on Thursday.

In Biratnagar

Mahendra Police Club (MPC) continued their emphatic winning streaks hammering ‘A’ division Kathmandu Club 6-1 to enter the final of the second phase at the Sahid Stadium, Biratnagar.

MPC veteran Dev Narayan Choudhary and Hari Khadka scored two goals apiece while Raju Pulami and Ramesh Budathoki struck one goal each in the match. Shushil Bhadra of the Kathmandu Club found the consolation goal.

Chaudhary netted in the 23rd minute of the match and 10 minutes later winger Pulami scored to give MPC a two-goal advantage before going for the break. MPC found four other goals in the span of 15 minutes of the second half. Khadka opened his account in the 50th minute followed by a strike from Chaudhary in the 51st. Likewise it took 11 minutes into the second half to make the score 5-0 as Budhathoki also scripted his name in the scoring chart. Khadka scored his second goal in the 15th minute through spot-kick.

In Nepalgunj

Sankata Sports Club (SSC) stunned Rani Pokhari Corner Team (RCT) to advance into the final of the Cup as they defeated the favourites 5-4 in penalty shoot-out on Wednesday.

The match went for tiebreaker after both the teams failed to break the 0-0 deadlock in the regulation time as well as added extra time. Sagar Thapa, Binod Lama, Kailash Dangol, Rajiv Nepali and Rajkumar KC converted the chance for Sankata while only Krishna Malakar, Aite Singh Tamang, Suk Bahadur Gurung and Harihar Thapa were straight on the target from RCT.

The match was reduced to 10-man affair when the match referee issued marching order to RCT captain Ramesh Gyawali and Sankata goalkeeper after both the players were involved in a brawl.
