Kyrgyzstan face Afghanistan in opener

KATHMANDU, March 13 : Kyrgyzstan will meet Afghanistan in the curtain raiser of the Asia Cup Pre-qualifying round slated to be held at the Dashrath Stadium from March 16.

The hosts Nepal will face off Afghanistan on 18th March while its second match in the tournament is scheduled for March 20 against Kyrgyzstan. The winning team of the tournament will advance to the qualifying round featuring Kuwait and South Korea. The Asia Cup finals will be held in 2004 in China.

Speaking at a press conference, the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) president Ganesh Thapa said that the Pre-qualifying round would be organised in a grand manner. "ANFA will try its best to make the tournament a grand success. It has been long time since our football teams played in an international match on home soil," said Thapa.

Asian Football Confederation (AFC), provider of technical assistance, directs the tournament while ANFA are the organisers. The expected budget of the tournament would reach two million rupees. The organisers ANFA have increased the charge of tickets for the tournament. Surya Nepal Private Limited is the main sponsor while Gorkha Brewery, Mount Everest Brewery, Dabur Nepal and Morang Auto Works are the co-sponsors.

He also informed that the matches under Olympic qualifying round between Palestine and Nepal would be held at the Dashrath Stadium on April 12 and 14.

Likewise, the association also informed that it would organise the halted Sahid Smarak National League in mid-May this year. Khukuri Cup finals, scheduled for the beginning of April earlier, will start only at the last week of April due to its coincidence with 9th South Asian Federation (SAF) Games. Both the National League and Khukuri Cup finals will be held at the Dashrath Stadium.
