UML still swears by five party alliance

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, Nov 22 - General Secretary of the CPN-UML, Madhav Kumar Nepal asserted that his party is still committed to the five-party alliance.

Refuting the rumours that the UML would join the government if Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa resigned, Nepal emphasised that his party would in no way break the five-party alliance.

"PM Thapa must resign and the king should implement the proposal put forth by the five parties," Nepal told The Sunday Post. The five agitating political parties had unanimously selected the

General Secretary Nepal for the next PM as a way out to rectify the ‘regression’. Nepal reiterated his claim that there would be change in the government within this week. "Thapa would step down after his SAARC nations’ tour," Nepal said.

Meanwhile, talking to reporters earlier today in Dang, Nepal said that the Thapa government was an obstacle for resuming dialogue with the Maoists. "If the Thapa government goes, the Maoists will have no reason to stay away from the dialogue," Nepal said. "They must come to talks."

He also asserted that the Maoists would never come to dialogue with the Thapa government, which, he claimed, compelled the Maoists to go back to the armed battle.
