Maoist insurgency

Days after the Maoists unilaterally broke off the cease-fire, the country has returned to bloody
skirmishes, targeted killings, deadly explosions, kidnapping and lootings. This all goes to remind
us that we are once again in for an extended period of violence and misery.

The Maoist insurgency is an outcome of incompetence, arrogance and undemocratic attitude of
the so-called leaders, who inherited leadership by accident rather than by merit. Prolonged
undermining of the problem has propagated the insurgency. Although the past two efforts to
re-establish peace through talks had failed, the latest effort was laced with unprecedented
flexibility on the part of the government.

The third round of talks failed, too, without even breaking the ice. This shows the belligerence of
the Maoists. The government on the other side has a daunting task of fighting the rebels, taking
the political parties in confidence and ruling the country smoothly.
