Promoting Export

PRIME MINISTER Girija Prasad Koirala inaugurated the Nepal Trade Fair-2000 in Kathmandu the other day, which was organised by Trade Promotion Center with the objective of  identifying the exportable items of Nepal and promoting Nepal’s export trade. Addressing the inaugural function,    Prime Minister Koirala asked the persons engaged in the trade  sector to concentrate their efforts in diversifying Nepal’s trade and promoting export. The items  displayed in the trade  fair range from handicrafts to agricultural products and manufactured goods.   At present Nepal’s volume of trade deficit is very big and this trend has been continuously increasing every year. The export trade in Nepal is  not that big in comparison to imports. The government has, thus, made several efforts to narrow the trade deficit through various measures including promotion of country’s export trade. It has announced several incentives and facilities to promote export trade. It has been realised that unless export is promoted, our trade deficit cannot be narrowed. Without bringing down the trade deficit, country’s economy cannot be healthy. Despite several efforts and policy measures announced by the government, the trade deficit has not yet been reduced. It is thus very urgent to increase domestic production and boost Nepalese export trade. For this, more investment  especially foreign investment needs to be brought to the country so that both production and   export can be promoted, which would narrow the trade deficit and contribute to boost Nepal’s national economy. Against this background Nepal Trade Fair-2000 has been organised in Kathmandu in which several prospective investors and those who are already engaged in export business are also taking part on various capacities. In this situation, the trade fair is expected to contribute to attract foreigns investment into Nepal and promote export of Nepalese   commodities abroad. However, such possibilities may be far-fetched ideas unless domestic policies and progarmmes were made conducive enough to bring more investment, increase production and promote exports. As said by Prime Minister Koirala, it is imperative to protect,   promote and encourage our export trade, so as to give a   definite direction to the country’s productive sector. The remarks of Prime Minister Koirala are very appropriate in the sense  that the government has been committed to promote  export trade in order to improve the economic condition of   the country. The trade fair shows that Nepal has much to offer to the rest of world from which investors can benefit which in turn would also contribute to the overall development of Nepal’s economy.
