Koirala congratulated

Kathmandu, Apr. 19 (RSS): Dr. Atef Ebeid, Prime Minister of the Arab Republic of Egypt has congratulated Mr Girija Prasad Koirala on his appointment as Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Nepal.

In a message of congratulations, Dr. Ebeid expressed the confidence that the coming days will witness more cooperation between the two countries for the prosperity of the two peoples.

Dr. Ebeid also wished Mr Koirala all success in his new office as well as the friendly people of Nepal more progress and welfare.

Prime Minister of Singapore Goh Chok Tong has congratulated Mr Girija Prasad Koirala on his appointment as the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Nepal.

In a message, the Singaporean Prime Minister said "You bring to the government of Nepal a wealth of knowledge and experience, which will undoubtedly prove to be crucial as Nepal faces new challenges in the new millennium."

Singapore and Nepal enjoy good and problem-free relations, he said, adding that he looked forward to working with Mr Koirala to further strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries.

Likewise, Croation Prime Minister Ivica Racan has congratulated Mr Girija Prasad Koirala on his appointment as Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Nepal.

Wishing Mr Koirala every success in carrying out his high and important duty, the Croation Prime Minister expressed the confidence that the relations between the two states will continue to develop to the mutual benefit and satisfaction of the peoples and states.

In the same manner the Bulgarian Prime Minister Ivan Kostov has felicitated Mr Girija Prasad Koirala on his appointment as Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Nepal.

Rodrigo calls on PM

Kathmandu, Apr. 19 (RSS): Mr Nihal Rodrigo, Secretary General of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (saarc) called on Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala at the latter’s office in Singha Durbar today.

On the occasion the saarc Secretary General briefed the Prime Minister on saarc related matters, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Kathmandu, Apr. 19 (RSS): Deputy Prime Minister Ram Chandra Poudel and Minister for Local Development will, on the recommendation of the Prime Minister, hold the additional portfolio of Water Resources, and Works and Physical Planning in the absence of Minister for Water Resources, and Works and Physical Planning Khum Bahadur Khadka who left here today for Britain for medical treatment.

This is stated in a notice issued today by the Principal Press Secretariat of His Majesty the King.

Lama wished recovery

Kathmandu, Apr. 19 (RSS): President of Rastriya Prajatantra Party Surya Bahadur Thapa has on behalf of his party and his own wished for speedy recovery of senior leftist leader Nirmal Kumar Lama, who is undergoing medical treatment at the Teaching Hospital for the last few days.

In a press release issued here today, the rpp has called on hmg to make additional necessary arrangement for Mr Lama’s treatment.

Kathmandu, Apr. 19 (RSS): Ambassador-designate of the State of Kuwait to the Kingdom of Nepal Mr Abdullah Ahmed Al-murad arrived here today to present his letters of credence.

He was received at the Tribhuwan International Airport by adc to His Majesty the King and the protocol officer, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Kathmandu, Apri.19 (RSS): A 5-member high level delegation of journalists from the Myanmar Journalists Association arrived here today on a week-long visit to Nepal at the friendly invitation of Nepal Journalists Association (Shakya).

The delegation led by president of MJA Soe Naung includes head of the Information Ministry Khin Maung Myint, Editor of Myanmar News Foreign Agency, assistant editor of information and public relations department Tun Tun Oo and editor of Myanmar Ahalin Daily Aung Myaing.

The delegation was welcomed by the president of Nepal Journalists Association (Shakya), ambassador of Myanmar to Nepal Tin Win, second secretary Augn Myo Mying and Nepalese Journalists.


Ex C-in-C rana passes away

Kathmanu, Apr. 19 (RSS): Former Commander-in-chief General Toran Shamsher J. B. Rana passed away at the Birendra Military Hospital, Chhauni on April 12, it is learnt from his family sources. He was 96.

Late Rana was decorated with earthquake service medal for his praiseworthy work in the relief and rescue operation in the devastating earthquake in 1990 B.S.

He was the commandent of the Srinath Battalion when the then government send eight battalions to help the British Government after the start of the second World War in 1996 B.S.

Decorated with various medals including Suprasiddha Manyabar Nepal Tara and Om Ram Patta, the late general Toran had served the Royal Nepalese Army for 40 years and then lived a retired life for another 40 years.

He is survived by his son and daughter.


Book released

Kathmandu, Apr. 19 (RSS): Minister for Information and Communications Jayaprakash Prasad Gupta launched the novel "Saranarthi" or refugee by Krishna Dharabasi here today.

Releasing the book at a function organized by the Niyatra Publications, Jhapa here today, Mr Gupta said the book depicts the contemporary situation in a meaningful way.

Expressions given to experiences which the author underwent being in proximity with refugees will make us sensitive towards the refugees, he added.

Academician and senior litterateur Bairagi Kainla, from the chair, observed that the book will help promote nepalese literature.

Various other speakers including literatteur Bishnu Bibhu Ghimire and Dr Govinda Bhattarai also expressed their views on the occasion.

Dhangadhi (RSS): Ex-Minister Bhim Bahadur Kadayat recently released a book on Tikapur town profile published by Tikapur Municipality.

Information about industrial, commercial and educational sectors have been incorporated in the book edited by Damodar Pandit.

On the occasion, ex-minister Kadayat said that the Municipality had done a commendable work by informing the city dwellers about its features.

The function was chaired by Mayor Ratna Bahadur Sanjyal.

 


Nepal joins World to mark Earth Day

Kathmandu, Apr. 19: Nepal joined the world to celebrate Earth Day 2000 with the commitment to check climate change, with the slogan clean energy for the solution of the problem created by climate change.

In a discussion programme held here today participants highlighted the importance and relevance of Earth Day. Environmentalist and officials of MoPE attended the programme organised by the Ministry of Population and environment (MoPE).

Dr Govinda Bhatta Secretary of MOPE stressed the need of social commitment to clean the environment. Every citizen should feel responsible in a way of cleaning the environment he said. He further added that more use of hydroelectrict power is the only answer to check the air pollution. Only with full cooperation between the government and private sector will be the success of green revolution.

Dr Dirgha Singh Bom, Director SAARC tuberculosis centre, urged the need to cure the disease spread by pollution. He also said environment pollution has changed life span of not only the human beings but also the other living creatures.

Bikash Pandey, energy expert, said the environmental out look for the future is not so bright. In other countries economic development goes in co-relation to environmental degradation but in Nepal while economic growth has not yet flourished, environmental deterioration has already increased to the alarming levels.

Environmentalist Heb Bahadur Khadka stated the need of stopping pollution contributing vehicles in phase wise. He further said that we should encourage the citizens to use vehicles less, which will be a contribution to clean the environment.

The Earth Day 2000 will continue for April 22nd. Various programmes including public rally and seminars are organised in this occasion.


GAESO raises its issues at UNCHR session

Kathmandu, Apr. 19: Officials of Gurkha Army Ex-Servicemen’s Organisation (GAESO) said that they presented the issue related to their discrimination by the British government on perks and pensions at the 56th Session of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR) being held in Geneva.

This is an issue of human rights violation, they said at a programme held here this afternoon.

Presenting the agenda at the meeting, Lecturer in Anthropology at Tribhuvan University Dr. Om Gurung said that there had been discrimination by the British government against the Gurkha soldiers of Nepal who were employed in the British Army since the First World War, said a United Press Release circulated at the programme. "Despite all the sacrifices and services that these soldiers had so valiantly provided to the British government and to the world community by serving as UN peacekeepers, the Gurkhas were blatantly and persistently discriminated against by the British Army on the mere fact of their national origin and of being non-white and non-European," the press release said.

The issue discussed under UNCHR’s agenda item on "indigenous issues" was tabled on behalf of World Federation of Democratic Youth, according to the GAESO officials who hoped that it would enter the upcoming UN General Assembly for discussion.

They said that the main objective of taking the issue to UNCHR was to draw the attention of the world body for the resolution of the conflict.

"We want to fight this battle legally, so we will knock on the door of the International Court of Justice if need be," said GAESO legal advisor Yubraj Sangraula, who arrived here today after taking part in the UNCHR meeting.

He said that the ex-Gurkhas would welcome British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook during his visit to Nepal. "We will be glad to put our views if he calls us for discussion on this issue."

The ex-Gurkhas have been fighting for facilities at par with their British counterparts. They continued their movement even after a recent rise in their pension citing that it was still discriminatory.


‘Govt sensitive on issues of territory’

Kathmandu, Apr. 19 (RSS): A meeting of the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs and Human Rights Committee here today held discussions on the regional works of the Nepal-India border.

At the meeting Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation and Culture Tarini Datta Chataut asserted that the government would not leave even an inch of Nepalese territory and border pillar would be erected at the specified areas in accordance with the treaty signed between the two countries.

MP Mangal Siddhi Manandhar pointed out that Mahakali river flowing through Limpiyadhura should be made the basis according to the Sugauli Treaty, and the government should give information on border encroachment at various places including Kalapani, Susta, Tilathi and Pashupatinagar.

MP Narayan Man Bijukchhe said encroachment of border at 65 places had been talked about at the parliament and the committee and details of the encroachment should be made available.

Joint secretary at the Ministry of Land Reforms and Management Punya Prasad Oli said there has been no border dispute between Nepal and India but difference has been seen in their behaviour and the map. Ad the details concerning border was not clear after the Sugauli Treaty, he added.

At the beginning of the meeting, director general of the Department of Survey Babu Ram Acharya, referring to the progress made by the joint technical committee so far, informed that there was no border dispute from the policy point of view at the places where border has been demarcated.

Likewise at the meeting of the House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee (pac), the secretary at the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation who was invited to the meeting said the Ministry had directed the Royal Nepal Airlines Corporation (rnac) to call tender to either purchase or lease aircraft, but it leased the aircraft by violating the aircraft.

A three-member committee has been formed to look into this and the rnac executive chairman has been called back to the Ministry by appointing another person in his place, he added.

Coordinator of the study sub-committee on the purchase of aircraft and rnac board member Shankar Prasad Koirala informed the meeting that purchase of a wide-bodied aircraft from a manufacturing company was recommended.

The meeting was chaired by committee chiarman Subhas Nemwang.

Meanwhile, chairman of the House of Representatives State Affairs Committee Homnath Dahal presided over the committee’s meeting here today.

The meeting held extensive discussions on the administrative irregularities pertaining to the parliament secretariat and the details received from the Ministry of Information and Communications in the context of holding discussions on administrative irregularities as mentioned in the annual report of the Public Services Commission.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the study sub-committee concerning works and transport constituted under the House Of Representatives Development Committee was held here today under the convenorship of sub-committee convenor Krishna Prasad Dahal.

At the meeting, detailed information were received on the activities being carried out so far by the department of roads, department of transport management, and national construction company of Nepal.

Achham, Apri.19 (RSS): A 17-year old Parvati Devi who is appearing in the on-going SLC Examination of 2057 gave birth to a baby in the examination hall at Betamaldu Highschool, Shreekot while writing her examination.


Untouchable beaten up for sharing bed

Mahendranagar, Apr. 19 (RSS): Jaya Ram Oda, a resident of Mahendranagar Municipality ward No. 4 has been insulted and beaten up just for sitting on the bed of others, in an apparent case of untouchability and communal discrimination.

He was carrying out some carpentry work at a local hotel owned by a person called Dhami near the bus park and he sat down on the bed alongside the doorsteps of a residence belonging to someone called Bhandari to rest for a while. For this reason, he was compelled to face punishment.

He was beaten up indiscriminately and his belongings worth Rs 5,000 seized.

He later lodged a complain against this mistreatment at the district administration office Kanchanpur, as the Constitution of the Kingdom of Nepal prohibits such treatment.

Meanwhile, Nepal oppressed community emancipation society, Kanchanpur has issued a statement demanding that the guilty be punished and the victim compensated.


Cooperatives vital for dev, says Majgaiya

Tribhuwannagar, Apr. 19 (RSS): Minister of State for Agriculture and Cooperatives and Nepali Congress central member and chief of the organisation department Baldev Sharma Majgaiya has said that the Ministry of Cooperatives has been created with a view to expedite the agricultural sector on a long term basis.

Mr Majgaiya said this at an interaction programme organised here today by the Nepal Press Union (NPU) Dang Unit.

He noted that the Prime Minister has laid priority on three issues of national concern, law and order, good governance and corruption control, and the present government would move ahead on this basis.

He said that a mechanism would be introduced to control corruption as early as possible and the government is working on a legal basis since corruption cannot be wiped out merely accusing someone if the pertinent laws are not there.

In reply to a query, he said that a survey team would be deputed soon to set up a milk chilling centre in Dang.

Shortage of fertiliser will not surface this year, and the government will monitor the price and quality of fertilisers imported by the private sector, he said.

There will be no obstruction from the present government in the dialogue with the Maoists, he cleared.

Npu Dang unit chairman Ram Prasad Poudel gave the welcome address at the function.


Jonchhe protests dissolution of NC committees

Bhaktapur, Apri.19 (RSS):

Nepali Congress, Bhaktapur district President Radheshyam Jonchhe has issued a press release protesting the dissolution of the NC district working committees of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Syangja and said that the measure is against the norms and values of democracy.

In the press release, he said that the decision of the NC central working committee to dissolve the district committees has shocked all who believe in the democratic system and traditions.

He expressed sadness over the dissolution stating that the decision which is against the recommendations of a probe committee has been taken without an impartial assessment of the performance of the Bhaktapur district working committee in the last three years.

The step has discouraged party workers, sympathisers and supporters and lent support to vested interest groups involved in creating disputes in the party organisation, it is added.


Govt halts broadcast of Space Time

Kathmandu, Apr. l9 (RSS): The Ministry of Information and Communications has halted all broadcast activities by Space Time Network Pvt Ltd as the latter has not paid revenue owned to hmg.

According to the Ministry, Space Time Network owes hmg more than Rs 2,800,000 in revenue.

Under the National Broadcast Act 2049 and the National Broadcast Regulations 2052, Space Time has to pay hmg four per cent of its total income as royalty.

Space Time has not paid royalty for the period from fiscal year 2053/54 to 2054/55 nor for 2055/56 despite repeated notifications from the Ministry to pay its dues and renew its licensce, it is stated in a communique from the Ministry.

As the royalties have not been paid and the license could not be renewed , it was not in keeping with the law for Space Time Network to engage in broadcast activities, it is stated.


Farmers not getting proper price of paddy in Rupandehi

Butwal, Apr. 19 (RSS): Farmers of Rupandehi district are disappointed at not receiving a proper price for their paddy.

The yield of paddy this year is much greater compared to last year. But the farmers have not been able to profit.

Vishnu Paudel, a farmer, says, "Leave alone the loan principal, even the interest could not be paid."

Traders here are trading in rice imported from India which is cheaper by 20 to 30 per cent.

According to the District Agriculture Development Office, the output of paddy sown on 73,000 hectares in the district was 211,700 mt. This is an increase of 16 to 20 per cent over the previous year.

As a result of the prevailing market price of rice, farmers are not able to recover even the cost of production.

President of Rupandehi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mahendra Narayan Shrestha says that at present an average of 15 truck loads for rice a day is imported from India.

According to Rupandehi Rice Mills Association, dozens of local rice mills are on the verge of closure due to the unrestricted import of rice from India.

Meanwhile, Butwal Chamber of Commerce and Industry has issued a press release urging the government to pay attention to resolving the problem which may also have a negative impact on employment .


Four injured in fire of spirit burst

Nepalgunj, Apr. 19 (RSS): Four persons including a woman sustained injuries in a fire that erupted when a jerry can containing spirit burst while the liquid was being poured onto a flame torch for use in a street procession against tobacco-like substances.

The four are undergoing treatment at Bheri Zonal Hospital for severe injuries to the hands, feet, throat and face.

Some others sustained minor injuries, it is learnt.


Compensation to victims raised

Kathmandu, Apr. 19 (RSS): The present government has given top priority to controlling terrorist activities and has expressed the determination to encourage security personnel and all civil servants involved in this task.

A provision has been made for additional financial assistance and compensation to security personnel, civil servants and general public victimised by terror and dependents of the victims.

According to the Home Ministry, the family of persons killed by terrorists will from now onwards be provided a financial assistance of Rs. 150,000/ and an additional Rs. 50,000/ will be provided to the family of those killed prior to this announcement.

The families of civil servants or individuals other than police personnel killed while on duty in works and action relating to controlling terrorism or maintaining law and order will receive a financial assistance of Rs. 750,000/ and their children will also receive scholarship as being provided to the children of police personnel killed while on duty.

Meanwhile, a health coordination committee has been constituted under the convenorship of the Health Minister with the secretaries of finance, home and health, and directors of Bir Hospital, T.U. Teaching Hospital and Birendra Police Hospital as members in order to make necessary arrangement for the medical treatment of those injured in terrorist activities.

The victim family assistance and rehabilitation coordination committee has also been constituted under the convenorship of the Education Minister in order to provide financial assistance and rehabilitate the dependent families of those killed by terrorists and other victims. The secretaries at the Ministries of Children, Women and Social Welfare, Home, Works, Housing and Physical Planning, Health, Labour and Transport Management, Land Reform and Management, and Sports and Education, and member-secretary of the Social Welfare Council are members of the committee.

Likewise, the compensation of Rs. 500,000/ being provided to the family of the police personnel killed while on duty in anti-terrorist activity has been increased to Rs. 750,000 and the families of those killed earlier will also receive an additional Rs. 200,000/.

Similarly, the children dependent on those police personnel will receive an annual scholarship Rs. 10,000 for studying at the primary level, Rs. 12,000 at lower secondary level, Rs. 14,000 at secondary level, Rs. 16,000 at the higher secondary level, Rs. 18,000 at graduate level and Rs. 20,000 at the post graduate level.

Police personnel sustaining minor injuries will be provided a compensation of Rs. 5,000 to Rs 25,000 after treatment while those dismembered will be provided Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 50,000/.

Likewise, police personnel on duty in the terrorist affected "A", "B" and "C" categories of districts will be provided an additional monthly allowance of Rs. 2000, Rs 1000 and Rs 700 respectively.

Besides this, any damage caused to the property of the police personnel deputed in the terrorist affected districts will be assessed and 50 per cent value will be provided, compensation of Rs. 3,000 to Rs 10,000 will be provided in case of damage caused to personal property of such police personnel and in case the uniform and toiletries received in accordance with the scale of police personnel is damaged by terrorist then they will be replaced.

Police personnel with good performance record in the terrorist affected districts have already been promoted as per the policy of His Majesty’s Government to immediately promote such police personnel making good performance in those districts.


Rajan foresees betterNepal-India ties

Mahottari, Apr. 19 (RSS): Indian Ambassador to Nepal K. V. Rajan has expressed the belief that Nepal-India relations will be consolidated and further deepened in the days to come since they are rooted in tradition.

Indian Ambassador Rajan made the observation while inaugurating the students’ hostel of the Ramanandan Bishweshwar Mahendra Campus, Jaleshwar, here on Tuesday.

The hostel building to be built on the premises of the Ramanandan Bishweshawar Campus was constructed with the cooperation of the Indian government.

Ambassador Rajan said the heads of the government of Nepal and India have resolved any bilateral issues that crop up from time to time between the two countries on the basis of mutual friendship and a spirit of good neighbourly relations.

He said India will continue to cooperate in the health, education, industrial and road construction sectors of Nepal.

MP Sitanandan Raya said that Nepal-India friendship remained a symbol of the traditional ties between the two countries.

MP Mahendra Kumar Mishra spoke about the cultural relations between Nepal and India.

MP Mahendra Yadav Madhukar also expressed his views on various facets of Nepal-India relations.

Chairman of the campus management committee and former minister Ram Bilas Yadav presided over the programme.

The five-room hostel was constructed with an assistance of Rs 500,000 of the government of India.

Meanwhile in Janak-purdham, Ambassador Rajan inaugurated a day-long seminar entitled " Women’s awareness against the dowry system" organised by the Forum for Women Education and Participation for Rural Development and Environment here on Tuesday.

Addressing the seminar, Ambassador Rajan said the notion that the dowry system was a part of the religion and culture was wrong and stressed women education to eliminate the dowry system from the society.

He said the dowry system is a form of corruption and all political parties and social workers should put in their active efforts to get rid of this social vice.

Professor Dr. Rajendra Bimal said that violence against women was increasing as a result of the dowry system.

Dhirendra Jha also expressed his views at the programme presided over by forum chairperson Sarada Jha.

President of Rupandehi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mahendra Narayan Shrestha says that on the average, 15 truckloads of rice a day are imported from India at present.

According to Rupandehi Ricemills Association, dozens of local ricemills are on the verge of closure due to the unrestricted import of rice from India.

Meanwhile, Butwal Chamber of Commerce and Industry has issued a press release urging the government to pay attention to resolving the problem which may also have negative impact on employment opportunities.

In Rajbiraj, as water from Koshi barrage has not been released to western canal and pump canal, summer paddy plants sown at 21,000 hectares of Saptari distrit has dried up and got damaged.

A group of farmers obstructed the flow of traffic and demonstrated at the Koshi Barrage last Sunday to highlight their hardship.

A delegation headed by member of Saptari District Development Committee and vice-president of district committee of Nepal Sadbhavana Party (NSP) Bishweshwar Rajak and Surya Narayan Mandal of NSP manhandled assistant CDO Bharat Mani Adhikari alleging that water had not been released in the canals and that Dr. Murali Singh of Sagarmatha Hospital refused to provide medical treatment to patients.

DDC member Rajak, Mandal of NSP and 10 others involved in the incident have been arrested.

Participants of the all party meeting convened by the district administration office last Sunday to discuss the issue deplored the incident and demanded stern actin against the culprits.

The meeting was attended by MP Mrigendra Kumar Singh Yadav, DDC chairman Dinesh Kumar Yadav, DDC vice-chairman Balaram Chaudhari, Rajbiraj Mayor, Saptari CDO, Superintendent of Police, head of Koshi pump irrigation office, medical superintendent of Sagarmatha Zonal Hospital, representatives of various political parties and journalists.

Action has been initiated under the public offences against those arrested, it is learnt from SP Sanandan Prasad Kurmi.


Decision to install eight Special Class Secretaries

Kathmandu, Apr. 19 (RSS): His Majesty’s Government has decided to install eight special class secretaries as special class secretaries at various ministries and the National Planning Commission Secretariat.

According to the cabinet secretariat, Mr Mohan Dev Pant has been installed at the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, Dr. Muktinarayan Shrestha at the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Mr Hiranyalal Regmi at the Ministry of Works and Physical Planning, and Mrs Urmila Shrestha at the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare. Likewise, Mr Khagendra Basnet has been installed at the Ministry of Education and Sports, Mr Damaru Ballav Bhattarai at the Ministry of Labour and Transport Management, Mr Barun Prasad Shrestha at the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation and Culture and Mr Sriman Shrestha at the National Planning Commission Secretariat.

Meanwhile Mr Srikrishna Gautam has been installed as chief officer of the special police department while Mr Padma Kumar Acharya has been sent to the reserve pool of the Ministry of General Administration.


Majgaiya inspects agri office

Tribhuvan Nagar (Dang), Apr. 19 (RSS): Minister of State for Agriculture and Cooperatives Baldev Sharma Majgaiya inspected the district agricultural development office in the course of acquiring information on the works of offices under the Ministry of Agriculture here on Tuesday.

On the occasion, Minister of State Majgaiya stressed maximum utilisation of the available means and resources and directed the officers to provide accessible and quality service.

The Minister of State for Agriculture and Cooperatives also expressed his determination to ensure regular and abundant supply of agriculture fertiliser this year unlike the previous years.

Stating procedures have been initiated for setting up a milk chilling centre in Dang, the Minister of State informed that a team will soon visit here to make an study of the project.

On the occasion, chief of the district agricultural development office, Dang, Shankar Lal Chaudhari, chief of the district livestock services office Dr. Basanta Bahadur Singh, manager of the Agricultural Development Bank Dang district branch Loknath Nepal, district engineer of Nepal Electricity Authority Makeshwar Jha and chief of the district cooperatives office Basudev Rijal apprised the Minister of State of the activities of their respective offices.


Vitamin ‘A’

Nepalgunj, Apr. 19 (RSS):  A total of 60,000 children aged between six months to five years in Banke district are to be administered Vitamin "A" capsules under the National Vitamin "A" programme.

Seven hundred women health volunteers will be deputed on duty at all the wards of the 46 VDCs and Nepalgunj Municipality in the district, according to the district public health office, Banke.

In November last year, some 58,000 children of the target age group here were administered Vitamin "A" capsules.

Vitamin "A" distribution centres have been set up at local schools and the VDC offices.

Sixteen supervisors will be on duty to monitor the Vitamin"A" distribution.

Similarly, a door-to-door campaign will be started soon so that nobody is left out of the drive, it is learnt from the district public health office.


Hailstones damage crops

Dhangadhi, Apr. 19 (RSS): About 25-50 per cent of the crops has been damaged by the hailstones saw Sunday in some parts of Kailali and Doti districts, according to local farmers.

The hailstones that last for an hour with a Gale and downpour has damaged wheat and vegetable crops and fruits in Sahajpur, Nigali and Godavari VDCs in Kailali and Ghanteswar, Laxminagar, Sarswati Nagar, Nirauli, Barchhen VDCs in Doti.

Kaphal, a fruit that rips in hilly region in the summer has also destroyed in a massive scale, it is learnt.

Local farmers are feared that prices of food grains may be shot up this year because of the damages caused by the hailstone.

In Chautara, hailstone which battered Badashe area of the district on Saturday has damaged the crop in the areas. The hailstone weighing up to 200 grams is learnt to have damaged the wheat, mustard, potato and maize crop at Ward Nos. 1,2,3,4,6 and 9 of Badashe Village Development Committee.

The hailstones also caused extensive damage in Taramarang and Mahankal in western parts of the district. The hailstorm is learnt to have caused extensive damage to the wheat crop and fruit trees in Taramarang VDC and maize and orchards at Ward Nos. 1,3 and 4 in Mahankal VDC.


Demise

Bhadrapur (RSS): Freedom fighter Rajaram Murmu passed away at his house in Surunga Bazaar on Tuesday. He was 70.

Mr. Murmu had spent more than seven years in exile in India and he was also jailed many times in connection with the democracy movement in the country.

He is survived by seven daughters and three sons. He was cremated at Kankai, Maidhar, the same day.


Fire death

Biratnagar (RSS): A three months old son of Som Bahadur Limbu, a resident of Phangling Village Development Committee (VDC), Taplejung district, died and property worth about Rs. 85,000 was gutted when a fire broke out at his house on Monday afternoon, the East Region Police Newsroom stated.

According to the police, the fire broke out all of a sudden when Lilamaya Limbu, the infant’s mother, went to collect firewood in the nearby jungle after putting the baby to sleep.

There was nobody to take care of the boy at the time of the fire, it is learnt.


Construction

Dhulikhel (RSS): Construction of a 23-kilowatt micro hydroelectricity project undertaken here with financial assistance of the rural energy development branch office, Kavrepalanchowk, is nearing completion.

In this connection, member of the district development committee (DDC) Krishna Bahadur Khulal handed over a check of Rs 1,054,987 for the project to project chairman Ek Bahadur Rawat at a function here recently.

The project is slated to be completed by next month. The project will benefit the people of Phalametar Village Development Committee and adjoining areas.

VDC chairman Indra Bahadur Thing presided over the check handover ceremony.


Seizure

Bhadrapur (RSS): Mechi Zonal Custom Office has held goods equivalent to Rs. 4,266,019 during the period from Poush, 2056 to end of Chait.

The goods which were held at the time of smuggling to and from the country include vehicular spare parts, electrical appliances, cotton fabric, light vehicles and food items.

A patrolling team comprising custom officials and police has been constituted to discourage evasion of custom duty and clamp down the trend of illegal import and export, chief of custom office Deepak Kharel said.


Health camp

Biratnagar (RSS): The B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) held a free health camp at Sijuwa village of Morang district in line with its policy of extending health care facilities in rural areas.

On the occasion, free health check-up services were provided to 414 persons while 200 others were imparted knowledge on HIV/AIDS, immunisation, family planning, child and maternal health care and treatment of gastroenteritis.

Additional Professor of the Department of Surgery and Department chief Dr. Chandra Shekhar Agrawal, Dr. Sanjaya Kumar and Daulat Thakur of the Department of Ophthalmology rendered their services at the health camp held as part of the community health campaign of the institute.


School building

Chautara (RSS): Construction of the Boldhe primary school at Ward No. 6 of local Mahankal VDC has been completed at the cost of Rs 217,000.

The four-room school building was constructed with a grant assistance of Rs 17,000 by the VDC fund, Rs 135,000 by the Action Aid-Nepal and local voluntary labour equivalent to Rs 65,000.

The school was inaugurated by VDC chairman Harka Bahadur Tamang at a function here recently.
