‘Women no less as journalists’

Kathmandu, Dec. 19 (RSS): Deputy Speaker Mrs Chitralekha Yadav has stressed the need for women’s participation in every sector for the overall changes in the country.

Yadav made this remark while inaugurating the seminar on the problems and challenges faced by the Nepali women and the role of women journalists in the trade union movement of Nepal organised by the Nepal Press Union (NPU) here today.

Noting that even though the number of women journalists were less in Nepal, Mrs Yadav said that the skill and capacity of the women journalists was not lessor than their male counterparts.

Referring to the various problems and challenges faced by the Nepalese women, the deputy speaker expressed the view that the capabilities of the women could be made honoured if the women’s representation is increased at the decision making level.

NPU ex-president Tara Baral said that emphasis should be given to the quality rather than number of women journalists.

Media advisor of Federich Ebert Stiftung P. Kharel said that journalistic professionalism has not yet developed in Nepal.

NPU founder advisor Shobhakar Parajuli stressed the need to develop the system of not infringing upon the rights of others while exercising one’s rights.

President of the Nepal Trade Union Congress Laxman Bahadur Basnet said that women’s participation was equally necessary in the field of journalism as in other sectors.

Speaking from the chair NPU president Kulchandra Wagle said that women journalists should be placed in responsible positions.

Director general of the Department of Information Yuvaraj Pandey, NPU vice president Murari Sharma, NPU general secretary Tarun Poudel and women journalist Amrita Banskota threw light on the role of women jouranlists.

At the one-day seminar, discussions were held on the working paper on the professional challenges of women journalists present by women journalist Rama Singh.
