PRIME Minister Girija Prasad Koirala said that the Nepali Congress, as a principled party, would be further strengthened following the tenth national convention. Addressing a gathering of the party workers in Janakpur the other day, Prime Minister Koirala said that the current debates in the party are the democratic exercises aiming at strengthening party organisation. It is true that debates, discussion and constructive criticism never weaken the party but strengthen the organisation and add more energy within party workers. It is the sign of internal democracy in the party. Conflicts and competition are the essence of democracy. In fact, such exercises are always encouraged and promoted in a democratic party. The Nepali Congress is the oldest political party in the country that has already fought two successful movements for democracy. Conflicts and competition exist in the party but are resolved through compromise and in a democratic way. Democratic exercises, constructive criticism and competition are discouraged only in a dictatorship. Such conflicts are the part of the Nepali Congress partys life right from its formation. The history of the Nepali Congress has shown that every time all problems in the party were solved democratically. This is the spirit that has developed the party as the largest political force in the country. As the tenth national convention of the ruling party is round the corner, such debates, discussion and criticism regarding the policies and programmes of the party are natural. These debates steer the party towards further consolidation and maturity. Once the convention is over, all the conflicts and debates would be put to rest until the next national convention. The Nepali Congress would emerge stronger following the forthcoming tenth national convention politically, ideologically and organisationally. There are, of course, some elements that are active to weaken and discredit the present multi-party democratic system. Thus, their first target is the Nepali Congress because, as they know, if the Nepali Congress is weakened, its direct fallout would be on the democratic system. Democracy is the best political system and it is the duty of all the democratic forces to safeguard this system and counter those who want to sabotage democracy. Against this background, democratic institutions and political parties need to be strengthened in order to consolidate democracy. Thus, democratic forces need to be united against the conspiracy hatched against the democratic system. Perhaps, the forthcoming national convention of the Nepali Congress would carry this message and provide more energy to the people to work for further consolidation of democracy in the country.
