Noteworthy Exercise

THE 36th meeting of the Nepali Congress central working committee concluded in Kathmandu adopting various resolutions and taking decisions regarding some vital national issues. The main focus of the meeting was law and order, Maoist insurgency, annual budget of the government, review of government’s performance in the first three months, party organisation and preparation for the forthcoming national convention of the party. The central leaders presented reports on different subjects and views were put forth in an open manner. The violence perpetrated by a group of misguided people, in the name of ‘people’s war’, is a serious problem in front of the government and NC NWC spent most of the time identifying the root causes and seeking means and ways to end the insurgency. It requested the government to take measures to maintain law and order in the country so as to provide the people with a sense of security. Regarding the problem caused by insurgency, it decided to request the government to initiate the process of dialogue with the insurgents for arriving at a peaceful solution to the problem and at the same time carry out development programmes in the Maoist affected areas.

Nepali Congress, the largest democratic party in the country, has always aimed at consolidating democratic polity and peoples’ rights and ensuring sustainable development to raise the social and economic condition of the people. These objectives cannot be fulfilled without peace. Violence and insurgency are by no means in the interest of the country, people, democracy and development. Thus, ending insurgency and establishing peace in the country is of utmost importance. Only then can development activities can be carried out without any hindrance and for the welfare of the people in general. Another important issue the ruling party engaged in serious deliberation was the annual national budget currently being discussed in Parliament. The conclusion arrived at the meeting was that the budget presented by the Finance Minister accorded due priority to poverty alleviation and development with the limited resources at disposal. This meeting of the NC central working committee was different from the previous meetings as central leaders engaged in soul searching among themselves regarding their successes and weaknesses in a healthy and democratic way. The suggestions put forward by the central leaders in the meeting would, no doubt, help the party emerge stronger in the future, which in turn is expected to reflect positively in the nation’s future.
