THE HOUSE of Representatives, Monday, witnessed lawmakers from both the ruling and opposition parties unitedly condemning the recent outbursts by some participants of a programme organised in the capital city by the so-called Nationalist Youths Forum a few days earlier. The strong and spontaneous condemnations by the ruling and opposition lawmakers came about when some of the participants of the said function not only had the audacity to openly defame the multiparty democratic system that was reinstalled in the country a decade ago by the blood, sweat and tears of the martyrs and pro-democracy fighters but even had the temerity to question the very rationale of ushering in the new dispensation. The uproar in the House over the aspersions cast on the obtained polity and system of governance by those participants prompted Home Minister Govinda Raj Joshi to issue a strong warning to all those trying to undermine multiparty system. Minister Joshi, apart from saying that such elements will face grave consequences, also pointed out that the government will not spare anyone if they act against the Constitution and the laws. Going by the news reports of the participants utterances, they were, by all counts, not only thoroughly mischievous in intent but patently irresponsible in content too. As for the speakers themselves, they can be termed as still living in a fools paradise. For, though the obtained dispensation may be only a decade old, the spirit, hope and the aspirations that propelled the long-suffering people and the then banned political parties to put their precious lives, limbs and very existence at stake to re-usher in multiparty parliamentary system of governance in the country are still as strong as ever. This can be vouchsafed by the unequivocal condemnations by the peoples representatives, to a lawmaker, of the uncalled for utterances of those delinquent participants as well as by the general consternation and anger of the Nepalese from all walks of life upon reading of those participants gall to censure the very dispensation that they have placed their faith, hopes and aspirations to better their living standards. Its not that such disgruntled elements, ever since the new dispensation was ushered in over a decade ago, had not been trying their level best to defame the multiparty system through covert and overt actions. Therefore, while the latest outbursts were verily a part of such subversive stratagems frequently resorted to by these ultra vires, their utterances should also alert all pro-democracy parties and forces to be eternally vigilantwhich, needless to say, is most essential to protect, propagate and buttress the hard-won multiparty system.
