Garbage, Garbage Everywhere... Now, the capital city seems to be saddled with a garbage problem. The KMC is reportedly not disposing the garbage dumped at every nook and cranny of the capital due to the lack of a dumping site. As a result, the capital city, especially the major areas like New Road and New Baneshwore, has turned into an open dumping site. However, the new settlement areas like Shantinagar in Ward No. 34 and Subidha Nagar of Ward no. 35 seemed to be free from the garbage problem. And it was possible due to the active roles of local clubs and Ward committees which are serious about the cleanliness of the locality. They have people to collect the household waste and keep the locality neat and clean. Surprisingly, on Wednesday morning, the people of Shantinagar found their clean locality turned into a dirty site. The roads were full of garbage emanating obnoxious odours. I had to cover my nose as I could not tolerate the sickening stench. Later, we found that the KMC had dumped the city waste on the bank of the Bagmati river. While doing so, it had dropped some of the garbage everywhere on the way to the river bank. It seemed the garbage was taken there in the midnight when all the locals were asleep so that they could not protest against the dumping of garbage in their own locality. What a surprise that a local body like KMC which is to serve the people, is irritating them by dumping the waste in their own backyard against their will! That too, in such an area which is kept clean by the local peoples efforts. Indeed, the time has come for the KMC to be serious about disposing the garbage if the capital city and its numerous localities are not to be converted into a huge, stinking dumping site in the near future.
