Encouraging Initiatives

THE present Nepali Congress government led by Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala had come to office with great expectations from the people. Four months have passed since then and virtually everyone agrees that the government has delivered the goods on several fronts. For example the recent decision to free thousands of people commonly called Kamaiyas from the clutches of feudalistic land owners, was one of the boldest decisions ever taken by any government. Meanwhile, the consensus the government has been able to forge with the opposition parties, is also praiseworthy. While the opposition parties have their own role to play to make the democratic system more effective, still, in matters of national interest, it is better for all parties to work together to achieve the targets. For example, in matters like uplifting the poor, providing employment to women and also resolving electoral disputes, it is difficult to see any responsible political party differing much. Confirming this, while speaking to journalists the other day, Deputy Prime Minister Ram Chandra Poudel, who also heads the committee that negotiates with opposition parties, informed that the government had reached to a number of agreements with the opposition parties on crucial issues and the last four months had also seen other important achievements from the government.

Now it is encouraging that the government is taking yet another step to fulfil another one of its commitments that it made while coming to power. Prime Minister Koirala had said that he would make full efforts to curb corruption, as the national economy had suffered immensely because of the rampant financial irregularities in all sectors of the society. It was the desire of the majority of the people that such immoral activities should be stopped and the fruits of development should reach the grassroots level. Deputy Prime Minister Poudel informed that the government is now in the final stages of announcing stringent policies to do away with corruption. It is also introducing three important bills in the current session of the Parliament to fulfil the promise it made regarding the control of corruption. If this social malaise is done away with, a lot of other ills that we see in the nation today will sooner, rather then later, disappear. It can be hoped that the opposition parties and all other sectors of the society will cooperate with the government in dealing with such crucial national issues .
