Individuals honoured for their social work

Kathmandu, July 21: Women, Children and Social Welfare Ministry today felicitated individuals and organisations involved in social services for their 'remarkable' contribution to social welfare.

Each of the five individuals and five organisations from five Regions of the country were given a cash prize of ten thousand rupees along with a letter of honour at a function here this afternoon.

Former Parliamentarian Maiya Devi Shrestha was honoured with the award for her financial assistance of six million rupees for the establishment of a college in Bharatpur while Sebai Lal Chaudhari of Sunsari for his long dedication and campaign to restore greenery by planting trees in his district. Chaudhari said he would not take a bath until he succeeded in his crusade.

Similarly, the first woman minister in the first democratically elected government Dwarika Devi Thakurani from Far West, social workers Krishna Kumari Pandey from West and Narvada Sharma from Mid West also received the award for their unfailing contribution to securing women's rights.

Likewise, social workers Kiran Koirala, Vidhya Paudel, Mukunda Bam Malla, Damar and Kamal Rupakheti also received the award on behalf of their respective social organisations.

Speakers at the function lauded the social workers for their untiring and disinterested efforts to bring about changes in society.

"The ones who sacrifice themselves for the cause of the others are social workers in the true sense because they not only guide the society to the path of progress but also give life to it," Deputy Prime Minister Ram Chandra Paudel said. "Everybody should get inspired by such personalities."

In the present context, the issue of social justice is getting more and more important in the world where other beliefs are on the verge of depletion, he said.

State Minister for Women, Children and Social Welfare Kamala Panta urged all to follow the path of the great personalities. "Things will be easier if we realise our duties and responsibilities," she said.

The Ministry Joint secretary Mohan Aryal, Member Secretary of Social Welfare Council Dr Tika Pokharel, Maiya Devi Shrestha, Kamal Rupakheti and Sebai Lal Chaudhari on behalf of the honoured also expressed their views at the programme chaired by the Ministry Secretary Urmila Shrestha.
