Upper Modikhola project to start production from 2002 Pokhara, July 22 (RSS): Preliminary works have been started for construction of the Upper Modi Khola Hydro-electricity Project. The water diverted from the confluence of the Modi Khola and the Bhurungdi Khola rivers to a reservoir five kilometres downstream at Syaule Besi of Ghandruk village in Kaski district would be used to generate 14 megawatts of hydroelectricity from the powerhouse to be constructed at Birethanti of local Dansingh VDC. The electricity power from project to be undertaken by the G-tech Nepal Private Limited will be transmitted to the Modikhola Hydroelectricity Sub-station at Nayapul by using a 4-kilometres long 132 kv transmission line. The current estimated cost of the project is 23.9 million US dollars. Out of the total estimated cost, 8.3 million US dollars would be spent on purchasing and installing of the machinery, gadgets, turbine, generator, transformer and transmission system and the remaining would be used for the construction. Agreement has been reached with the banks of China for construction of the project to be operated by the private sector. Eighty-one per cent of the total estimated cost would be financed through loans while the remaining cost would be met by mobilising the company resources. It is estimated that the run-off-the-river type project will take three years to complete. The project will begin production in 2002 and the power generated by the project will be connected to the national transmission grid. The Upper Modikhola Hydroelectricity Project is the fifth of its kind in the country being developed by the private sector. The other four projects undertaken by the private sector are the 60 megawatt Khimti Project which has already commenced productions, the 36 megawatt Bhotekoshi project which is expected to be commissioned within two/three months, the five megawatt Indrawati-III and the 20 megawatt Chilime Project. The last two are expected to be completed in two years. Other Stories |
