Joint Efforts The country is going through challenging times with problems cropping up in different sectors. The major challenges, as pin-pointed by the present government are; maintaining law and order, controlling corruption and providing good governance. Yet, what must be realised by all people, is the fact that the problems cannot be solved by the government alone. The opposition parties, the civil society and the general populace, all will have to pitch in their effort to do away with the malaise being suffered by the nation as a whole. The present government led by Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has done well by forming a Dialogue Committee, with Deputy Prime Minister Ram Chandra Poudel as its convenor, to hold talks with the opposition parties on issues of national interest. Just the other day, DPM Poudel, in a letter to all the opposition political parties in the Parliament, informed that His Majestys Government has already taken decisions on the basis of talks held with the various parties to send for action the reports on different major issues that have been brought up. This clearly demonstrates that the government is prepared to listen to the voice of the opposition and initiate action on their legible demands. Going by what Deputy Prime Minister Poudel has revealed in his letter to the opposition parties in the Parliament, the government has expressed willingness to initiate action on virtually all the demands that have been put up by the opposition parties. Issues like making public the red passport report, formulating laws on civil servants making their property public, increasing the effectiveness of CIAA, releasing arrested political workers, making impartial appointments in different sectors and many other important demands, all have been positively considered by the government. Now it is the responsibility of the opposition parties too to cooperate fully with the government in actually implementing all the agreements that have been reached. They must abandon the strategy of opposing just for oppositions sake. This will not do good for anyone. When the government has shown so much willingness to work together with the opposition parties to solve national issues, they too must step forward and do their bit. It can be hoped that with the joint efforts of the government and the opposition parties, the nation will see better days ahead. Other Story |
