PRIME Minister Girija Prasad Koirala said at a function the other day that politics should be for strengthening democracy, people's fundamental rights and development. Prime Minister Koirala, addressing party workers in Terhathum district, asked all to put the people at the centre stage of all development activities. It is true that the objective of all political parties is to strengthen people's rights, raise their living standard and ensure overall and sustainable social and economic development of the country. Despite this common objective and goal, political parties do not seem to have chalked out a common strategy and approach for the development of the nation and uplift the social and economic status of the people. In many cases, parties and politicians still appear to be bugged down in their petty partisan interests even on the issue of development. This is one of the impediments in our development strategy and campaign. Political parties and politicians should rise above their partisan interest while chalking out development programmes and implementing them, which alone can ensure sustainable develompent in the country. The political parties and leaders seem to have now realised the need of a national consensus and mutual cooperation in formulating development policies and programmes and executing them. Development cannot materialise unless everyone at the grass roots level are mobilised. The bottom-up approach with active participation of people at the local level can only ensure sustainable development, empower local communities and ultimately strengthen democracy. The main prerequisites for sustainable development are consensus and cooperation among political parties and an atmosphere of peace and stability in the country. At present some minister efforts have been made in some districts to create destablisation and disturb the law and order situation which pose serious threats to our development endeavours. As said by Prime Minister Koirala, peace and security are a must for country's development. In view of this, the government has accorded priority to maintaining law and order, peace, security and stability in the country to facilitate development activities. Against this background, the remarks and call of Prime Minister Koirala to put the people at the centre stage of development and make development of the nation as the goal of politics carries special significance. Political parties, leaders and workers need to realise and put it in action for the overall development of the country as well as consolidation of democracy. Other Story |
