PRIME Minister Krishna Prasad Bhattarai said the other day that the leadership of the government would be handed over to younger generation leader of the Nepali Congress. There have already been demands from younger leaders and supporters and well-wishers of the Nepali Congress to hand over leadership of both the government as well as the party to younger generation to give new vigour and strength to the party. At present, the leadership of the party and the government is at the hand of the two septuagenarian leaders-Bhattarai and G.P. Koirala..Both the leaders have made a tremendous sacrifice for the cause of democracy in the country and development of the party organisation. The supreme concern of both the leaders in now the consolidation of democratic polity and speedy development of the country. In this context, the decisions of the Prime Minister Bhattarai to hand over the leadership of the government must be taken with appreciation. The two first generation leaders like Koirala and Bhattarai have invaluable experiences and the younger leaders of the Nepali Congress should learn from it and apply for the best interests of the country and people. The Nepali Congress have fought two revolutions for democracy and human rights in the country, and in both revolutions Koirala and Bhattarai played pivotal roles. Now, the younger generation needs to carry forward the spirit of the Nepali Congress for which they should be given responsibility. The two first generation leaders now have to play the role of guardians within the Nepali Congress and guide young leaders for governance and running the party. If responsibilities are given to the younger generation leaders and they are encouraged to work strictly in line with the principles and ideals of the Nepali Congress, the party would go from strength to strength. For this, the two leaders need to train the younger leaders to discharge their duties to the best interest of the people and the country, which is also the interest of the Nepali Congress. The second-generation leaders of the Nepali Congress have to be entrusted with the leadership at a time when the first generation leaders are active enough to guide and advice. As said by Prime Minister Bhattarai, now time is ripe for handing over the leadership to the younger generation of the party to provide the latter adequate experience in order to lead the party and give new and positive direction to the nation.
