THE opposition leader
in Parliament and general secretary of Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist)
Madhav Kumar Nepal, with much sense of responsibility, said the other day that his party
has taken the recent remarks of Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala on various national
issues very positively. Premier Koirala, before and after assuming the responsibility of
country's Prime Minister, has been very consistent regarding some of the burning
national issues and expressed his resolve to solve them with honesty and integrity. Prime
Minister Koirala's priorities and concerns have been corruption control, maintenance of
law and order and good governance and other issues that have directly affected the people.
Towards this end, he has often discussed with the leaders of opposition parties and sought
their constructive suggestions and active cooperation. These are also the issues
opposition parties have raised both within and outside Parliament. It seems there is no
differences among the political parties- ruling or opposition- regarding country's
problems and need for their solution, although approaches may differ. The government has
also constituted a committee to coordinate with the opposition parties to tackle the
issues they have raised. Efforts have been made on the part of the government to create an
atmosphere of cooperation and understanding between the ruling and opposition parties on
several national issues. Here in, what needs to be mulled over is that whether street
protests, which main opposition party recently launched, were really necessary for the
solution of the nation's problems at a time when the government itself has clearly
expressed its commitment to work for the same and asked the opposition to cooperat. The
opposition party in Parliament is also the part of the government in the sense that it is
the loyal opposition of His Majesty's Government. Its duty is to alert the
government on several national problems and cooperate for their solution. Given the
present situation, the country needs collective efforts from all political parties for the
progress and development of the nation. What is heartening is that it seems both the
ruling and opposition parties have realised this and started the process of understanding
and cooperation with each other. For, the nation, at a time when politics of violence has
posed a serious challenge to democratic polity and country's development efforts, needs to
face and solve this problem as well as others, unitedly. Against this background, what
opposition leader Nepal has said should also be translated into concrete action for the
greater interest of the nation. Other Story |
