THERE have been many positive developments in the country since the re-ushering in of democracy about a decade back. The most precious asset for the people, is the total freedom they enjoy right now. Before the establishment of democracy, virtually all fundamental rights of the people were curtailed and draconian action could be initiated on any person who dared to step out of line. However, one fallout of the political freedom that the people enjoy now, is the misutilisation of the rights guaranteed by the democratic Constitution by some persons. Such elements have tried to take advantage of the open environment and disrupt normal life in the country, by resorting to violence and terrorist activities. Quite rightly, while speaking to senior police officials of the five development regions and Kathmandu Valley, Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Ram Chandra Poudel pointed out that such terrorist activities in various parts of the country have affected the interests of the people and the nation. Such anti-national activities must be stopped by the government, so that life in the affected areas can return back to normalcy. There is no doubt that the police play an important role in maintaining the law and order situation of the country. Now, the terrorist activities being carried out by the Maoists has come as a big security challenge for the entire police force. Hundreds of policemen have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty while fighting such terrorist elements. While sending the police personnel to combat the insurgents, it has become imperative that they are well trained and well equipped. The government must ensure that there is proper logistics to back all those who are risking their lives to protect the ordinary people. Of course it is a sad aspect that a huge amount of budget that should have been spent on development activities, is now being spent on security measures. But this fact alone makes it even more necessary for the government to bring the terrorist situation under control. Only after that can people feel secure and the government can focus on development goals. The policemen themselves must understand the immense responsibilities that they shoulder. Their sincerity and commitment can go a long way in fulfilling the governments objective of maintaining peace and security in the entire country. Other Story |
