Religious festival in Kirtipur Kirtipur, Nov. 11 (RSS): A month long religious festival has been in progress at the Adinath Temple, Chobhar under Kirtipur Municipality since November 7. Devotees throng the temple to take part in the festival that started with "Hom" rites performed separately by priests of the Newar, Brahmin and Chhetri communities. The day before the coming full moon, devotees go through a fast as part of the festival which both Buddhists and Hindus celebrate. According to elders of the locality, any devotee who undertakes fast and takes only holy water from a well within the temple premises does not go back home until a relative comes to take him or her back. In case a wife or husband is on the fast and the spouse fails to call to fetch him or her back, they divorce. Some people come here for the fast expressly for the purpose of terminating an unwanted marital relationship. This fasting practice is therefore also known as a divorce fast. It is also customary to nail household articles to the temple in the belief that such items can be obtained by one after death. It is believed that anyone suffering from ailments can recover if he pays proper homage to the temple. Other Stories |
