Govt for skill-oriented education: Upadhyaya

Biratnagar, Nov. 25 (RSS): Minister for Education and Sports Amod Prasad Upadhyaya has said that as weak management has resulted in low output in education sector, which consumes the biggest chunk of the total budgetary outlay, the government is making preparations for introducing skill and employment-oriented education system to produce highly skilled manpower much needed to the country.

Minister Upadhyaya, who was speaking at a day-long meeting of the district level representatives of the Nepal Teachers' Association, Morang organised by the association at Biratnagar today, warned that should teachers, civil society and the government fail to rectify the weaknesses surfacing in the education sector in time, the country's educational condition will see further deterioration in the days to come.

He also urged teachers to give serious thought to bridging the gap between the educational standards of government and private schools.

Stating that the government has taken a liberal decision to provide the teachers with salary and allowance on par with those of the civil service employees, he said a similar decision will be taken soon in the case of the teachers working in remote areas.

Efforts are being made to resolve the problems of the posts of temporary teachers, he said, adding however, it should be clear to one and all that resolution of the problem concerning temporary teachers' posts alone will not help resolve the problems facing the education sector.

Some hasty decisions taken for cheap popularity after the restoration of democracy have resulted in serious problems in the education sector today, he observed.

Nepali Congress Morang district president Ashok Koirala stressed the need for the teachers to work honestly for raising the standard of education and building a congenial academic environment.

Eastern regional education director Birendra Kumar Singh, Morang DDC chairman Khadga Bahadur Basnet and others also expressed their views.

President of the Nepal Teachers' Association district president Rabidananda Chaudhari presided.

Meanwhile, in Rangeli (Morang), Minister for Education and Sports Amod Prasad Upadhyaya inspected the newly-constructed Madhubani Primary School at ward No. 6, Rangeli VDC of Morang district yesterday and acquired information on the physical facilities and academic activities of the school.

On the occasion, headmaster of the school Govinda Pandit presented a report on the educational activities and the physical condition of the school.

On the occasion a scholarship fund of Rs 12,000 in memory of late Amar Bahadur Poudel, father of local social worker Mohan Bahadur Poudel, was also set up.

The scholarship would be given to the meritorious students of the local Rangeli Public High School for 25 years.
