Even 45 yr old women trafficked to Indian brothel Butwal, Sept. 1 (RSS): News of many young Nepali girls being trafficked to various Indian cities into the sex industry has become commonplace. Not only young girls, but now women in their late forties or so are also being trafficked to the brothels in India. Sounds strange? The case of 45-year-old Dhanmaya says it all. According to the Maiti Nepal, a social institution which has been rehabilitating Nepalese girls returning from Indian brothels and campaigning against girl trafficking, Dhanmaya and four other girls had been duped and taken to Poona, India by some unscrupulous middlemen. She is lucky that she is back in Nepal after a month. She was saved from being sold off to a brothel in Poona. Dhanmaya who owned a tea stall at Siranchok in Pokhara was taken along with four other girls to Poona by five local youths in the pretext of visiting the Indian city. One among the four girls who were trafficked to India with Dhanmaya is married and she even took her child with her to India. The girl with the Surname Gurung says her husband is away working in Saudi Arabia. She is full of regrets for her foolish decision to trust these young men and go on a visit with them. She says with remorse, "What would have been of this child had I been sold off ?" The remaining three girls are also from the Gurung community. They all used to live in a tenement at Siranchok and were acquainted with Dhanmaya. The youths who duped the girls and took them to India have been identified as Rabi, Kumar, Prakash, Govinda and Shyam. Dhanmaya and the four Gurung girls are now cursing their foolishness in easily believing the youths. "We did not have the slightest of doubt in our minds that we were being taken to Poona with the intention of selling off us to brothel. We only knew all hell was loose when we were locked into a room." It was sheer luck that two girls from the group managed to escape from the pimps. They went to the nearby police station and informed the authorities. The police conducted a raid at the house where the other girls and Dhanmaya were being kept in captivity. The police arrested the youths and the girls. They were then taken to a girls hostel and the youths taken into custody for investigation. Other Story |
