Nepal & Millennium Meet

PRIME MINISTER Girija Prasad Koirala leaves today for New York to address the United Nations Millennium Summit to begin from September 6. Since it is the first UN General Assembly of the 21st century, it carries more importance because it would be reviewing the performance and progress of the world body in the last 55 years and chart out new strategies and programmes for the twenty-first century. The United Nations, despite several constraints, has been successful in accomplishing its objectives and goals, barring a few exceptions, in the world for the last half a century. It has prevented major wars and played a crucial role in resolving conflicts, defusing tensions and keeping peace in the world. Now, the world cannot be imagined without the UN. These achievements of the world body are, undoubtedly, because of the collective efforts of all its member states. Thus, the success of the UN is the success of its member states.

Now the world has seen a sea-change in different fields. At the same time, several new challenges have come up that the UN needs to deal with in the present changed global context. Peacekeeping has been as challenging as it was in the past and the UN has been engaged in this effort in several conflict-prone areas of the world, thereby increasing the roles and responsibilities of the UN further. As such, there is a growing awareness among the nations and peoples of the world about the important role of the UN. Similarly, there have been demands from all sectors for an increased and more effective role for the UN in tackling the new challenges of the world, including keeping the peace ensuring sustainable social and economic development and protecting human rights and environment conservation. These are the challenges not only of the UN but also of all member nations. Thus, if the UN is to accomplish its goals with its limited resoruces, the member states also need to fulfill their commitments to the UN for the further success of the world body in creating a peaceful and prosperous world. So far as Nepal is concerned, it has always advocated and played a crucial role in making the UN stronger and more effective. The participation of Nepal in the General Assembly at the Prime Ministerial level is a clear indication that Nepal attaches great importance to UN. As the present General Assembly is to chart out a comprehensive strategy to cope with the challenges of this new century, Nepal, represented by Prime Minister Koirala, would definitely play a more effective role in shaping policies of the UN for the benefit of the Third World nations which have been lagging far behind in the overall development status. We wish Premier Koirala bon voyage and all success in his worthy endeavours.
