Implement laws to check corruption, says Paudel Tanahu, (Damauli), Sept. 7 (RSS): Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Local Development who is also holding the portfolio of the prime minister Ram Chandra Paudel has said that inadequacy of the laws only is not everything for the controlling of corruption. Talking to local reporters at Damauli of Tanahu today, DPM Paudel stressed the need for all the bodies responsible for checking corruption to fulfill their responsibility by actively implementing the laws to check corruption. We have made an effort to empower the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) by reforming the laws sensing the shortcomings in the CIAA for controlling of corruption, he said, adding that CIAA should exercise its powers properly. Earlier, inaugurating the western regional talk programme on Elimination of Corruption and Other Evils in Development Works: Whose Responsibility? organised by the Nepal Construction Entrepreneurs Association (NCEA), Tanahu, DPM Paudel said there should be transparency in everything for freeing the country from corruption as well as to develop democratic political culture and awareness in civil society. He informed that bills have been tabled in the parliament for empowering the CIAA, and on corruption and special court, adding that the corruption does not end from the society with the wishes of a single person or a leader but such evils should be eliminated by creating awareness in the society. In the context of half of the foreign assistance is spent by their own consultants, Mr Paudel said there is a need for reform in our foreign aid policy. He called on the construction entrepreneurs to stop giving commission for obtaining contracts and working forcefully on the basis of syndicates to check corruption. The entrepreneurs should show the courage not compromise for good quality works, he added. MP Tukraj Sigdel said corruption has gripped not only the construction entrepreneurs but all the sectors, adding that all of us have not been able to perform well from our respective positions. It is a predicament that no list has been brought to light in connection with action taken against the corrupt persons and smugglers after the restoration of democracy. Central president of the Nepal Construction Entrepreneurs Association Jeep Chhiring Lama said that rule and regulations should be meant for the people and the nation and not for the interest of the employees and the leaders. Outgoing president Ramesh Sharma called for positive cooperation from all sectors in the anti-corruption campaign. At the seminar attended by entrepreneurs from all the 16 districts of the western development region as well as other development regions, president of the Eastern Regional Construction Entrepreneurs Association Keshav Prasad Gautam and outgoing president Ramesh Sharma presented separate working papers on Ellimination of Corruption: Whose Responsibility? and State of Development Works: Challenges and Expectations. At the programme presided over by president of Tanahu district NCEA Ram Chandra Neupane, various other speakers including general secretary Shukuntalal Hirachan and representatives of various political parties also expressed their views. Inaugurating a blood donation programme organised at Damauli by the Rural Unity Centre, DPM Paudel lauded the role played by the Red Cross in the development of a human welfare society. At the function presided by Rural Unity Centre president Keshav Bhattarai, 30 persons donated blood. Addressing a pre-plan formulation seminar organised by the DDC human resources development unit, DPM Paudel stressed that man should be the focal point of development while formulating development plans.
