Nepal walks away with most of gold medals BY A STAFF REPORTER Kathmandu, Sept 8 : Sri Lanka once again blocked Nepals chances of making a clean sweep on the final day of the South Asian Wushu Championship being held at the National Sports Council Covered Hall today. In the Routine Exercise Nepal collected four gold while Sri Lanka took hold of one gold out of five at stake in the different categories for mens and womens events. Out of the 28 gold medals at the stake, Nepal collected 23 gold, Sri Lanka three and India two. Binod Lama collected the best mens trophy while Bina Lama took the best womens trophy whereas Narayan Shrestha took the best mens trophy in the shan-shou combat. However, in the in the shan shou combat categories Nepal collected two gold medals while Sri Lanka won one gold. Nepal by picking up the highest gold medals at stake in the three days Wushu Championship and became yet another power house like karatekas and taekwandoits in South Asia. In the mens Nangun, as expected Nepal won all three medals at stake. As expected Binod Lama collected gold while Sanjay Maharjan and Suraj Shrestha picked up silver and bronze medals respectively. Similarly in the womens nandao, Nepalese wushu players made a clean sweep .Neema Dhamala won the gold while Ruku Thapa Buddisara Thapa collected silver and bronze meadls respectively. However, in the mens sword play ( jianshu) Sri Lanka halted the Nepalese domination as Sampth Saijith took the gold while Raj Kumar Thapa and UR Munashinghe collected silver and bronze respectively. In the womens gunshu, Bina Lama collected gold. Mamtabudhathoki clinched silver while Samaravvickrama D took the bronze. Meanwhile, in the womens Nandao, Neema Dhamala of Nepal gave Nepal fourth gold while Ruku Thapa took the silver. Neelam Sharma of India picked up the bronze. Meanwhile, in the San-shou (combat) Nepal took two gold medals while Sri Lanka took one out of three at the stake. In the 60-65 kg, Shyam Bista of Nepal outplayed R.K Shanti Kumar of India. In the 60-70 kg, Bhusan Bajracharya of Nepal collected the second gold by defeating Eranga Weerassinghe of Sri Lanka while Jitendra Kumar of India picked up bronze medal. In the tightly contested battle, Elvis Nishantha of Sri Lanka caused a major upset by defeating Jitendra Kumar of India for the gold. |
