Koirala signs two protocols on child rights

Kathmandu, Sept. 9 (RSS): Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala Friday signed two optional protocols to the Convention on the Rights of the Child at a signing ceremony organised at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, coinciding with the period of the U.N. Millennium Summit.

According to the Foreign Ministry, the two documents signed are the optional protocol to the convention on the rights of the child on the sale of children, child pornography and child prostitution, and the optional protocol to the convention on the rights of the child on the involvement of children in armed conflict.

On the same occasion, Nepal also deposited its instrument of accession to the convention on the safety of the U.N. and associated personnel.

Permanent representative of Nepal to the U.N. Murari Raj Sharma, Foreign Secretary Narayan Shumshere Thapa, and under-secretary general and legal counsel of the United Nations Hans Corel (representing secretary-general Kofi Annan) were present on the occasion.
