IN the contemporary world many problems do surface for securitypersonal or state. We come across many news stories concerning computer viruses, thefts of passwords and cheating many security equipment and staff in sensitive places. These cases could lead to such unpleasant incidents as roberry, terrorist acts, airplane or other cases of hijacking to name a few. And in many cases the culprit escapes while in others, nabbing the guilty ones becomes difficult and time taking process. The use of the biometrics though an expensive proposition for poor country like Nepal could provide answers to some security problems. Biometrics means recognition of people from their face, fingerprints, eyes and other bodily features. Currently, people type in their passwords to get known to their computers and up their e-mails or to get into private and confidential business. This practice has its own drawbacks. People normally use familiar numerical or Roman alphates, names or their combination as passwords. Others could easily identify these. There is an equal risk of this being forgotten or misplaced causing a lot of hassles or troubles. Instead of password why not get the use of physical features like face, fingerprints or perhaps the voice familiarised with their electronic gadgets. Unlike the passwords these private identifications hardly get lost or stolen or misplaced and can be more secure. Computers have today become a part of life with many people. Already efforts are under way to fashion them in such a way their they can recognise the users by their fingerprints or face or voice! This techniques can perhaps help security agencies in airports and other sensitive places by spotting out potential trouble creators. Nepal is left out far behind other countries is adopting new techniques or technologies. Now there is much talk of information technology in Nepal. I want to draw the attention of the concerned authorities that they need new developments and prepare to adopt them on time. This could help Nepal avoid some of the embrassing moments in cases of vital security needs. Robin Acharya |
