Contractors urged to change working style, perceptions

Kathmandu, Sept. 15 (RSS): Central president of the Federation of Contractors' Associations-Nepal Jip Chhiring Lama inaugurated the second general meeting of the Kathmandu Valley Contractors' Association here recently.

Addressing the meeting, Mr. Lama urged the contractors to change their working style and perceptions at a time when people are complainting about declining standards in development and construction work.

Outgoing president of the Federation Ramesh Sharma noted that although Nepali builders and contractors have made a lot of improvement in their working capabilities, the government has still not stopped hiring foreign contractors.

He said domestic contractors should protest against foreign contractors who are eating into the labour market.

First vice-president of the Federation Yakshya Dhoj Karki, general secretary Sakunta Lal Hirachana and treasurer and chief of the Publicity Department Amar Bahadur Shrestha also spoke on problems facing Nepalese contractors.

At the general meeting chaired by president of the Kathmandu Valley Contractor's Association Ang Thiley Sherpa, member of the Federation's Working Committee Rishi Ram Adhikari said contractors should raise their voice on the basis of the Damauli Declaration.

Member of the Federation Working Committee and president of the Central Region Contractor's Association Moti Lal Sharma disclosed that contractor's associations have been formed in all the 19 districts of the Central Development Region.

Advisor of the Valley Contractors' Association Som Prakash Prasai urged the Federation to work according to the sentiments of the district level associations.

Earlier in Kathmandu, National Planning Commission (NPC) vice chairman Prithviraj Ligal, who was inaugurating a three-day workshop seminar on logical framework approach (LFA) here recently, stressed the need for effective monitoring for improving the implementation aspect of development projects.

Mr. Ligal also gave the information that LFA has been made mandatory for designing projects to be launched with foreign or central level government resources from the current fiscal year.

NPC member-secretary Sriman Shrestha called for active cooperation of all ministries and departments in applying LFA as an effective tool, while ADB appointed advisor Dr. Bishwo Keshar Maskey elaborated on the technical aspects of LFA.

Thirty officers of various ministries and departments are taking part in the workshop.
