THE country has already seen much blood shed and loss of enormous life and property in the last five years because of the violence and insurgency perpetrated by the ( Maoists). About 1500 people including security personnel and innocent civilians have been killed and property worth billions of rupees has been damaged. The violence and insurgency have severely affected the development activities in some western hilly districts. Maoist insurgents have been resorting to killing political activists, security personnel and innocent civilians and looting and destroying public property in the name of "peoples war". Only the other days, the Moist launched the biggest-ever offensive in Dunai, headquarters of Dolpa, in which 12 policemen lost their lives and more than three dozen others were injured while fighting with the insurgents. Rebels also robbed over 50 million rupees from Dunai branch of Nepal Bank Ltd, , destroyed several key installations including district land revenue office, district administration office, district police office, and district jail and released prisoners. Nepal is a democratic country that allows all individuals and organisations to carry out their political activities peacefully within the framework of constitution. When constitution itself has guaranteed the right to carry out political activities openly in a peaceful manner, the violent approach is clearly against the democratic political system that was ushered in ten years ago. Moreover, the government has openly called upon the insurgents to give up violence and come to negotiating table to solve the problem peacefully. Despite governments liberal and flexible approach, the insurgents have not been positive enough about it. The fundamental duty of the government is to maintain law and order and protect life and property of the people. At a time when the government has already issued strict instruction to all concerned bodies to take necessary measures to maintain law and order in the country, the incident in Dolpa comes as a big challenge to it. Violence breeds violence and no political, social and economic goals can be achieved by means of killing innocent people and looting public property. As the country has already suffered much, more violence only ruins the prosperity of the nation. In this situation, violence must be condemned from all sections of the society and all political parties, organisations and people need to be united such killings and looting. At the same time, government needs to strengthen law and order and assure the people that their life and property is secured. Other Story |
