Katari-Ghumri road opens for public

Kathmandu, Sept. 26 (RSS): The forty-six kilometer Katari-Ghumri (Sunkoshi river) portion of the 88-km long Katari-Olkhadhunga road being constructed by the Royal Nepalese Army has been opened for public transport from today.

The head of the Katari-Okhaldhunga road construction battalion disclosed that the road has been opened in the presence of Udayapur CDO, DDC vice-chairman, Katari VDC chairman, journalists and chiefs of local offices this morning.

According to the Royal Nepalese Army, transport services along the road began with four buses and 14 trucks leaving for Ghumri.

On the occasion local office-bearers and journalists inspected the 26 km portion of the road.

The 88 km long Katari-Okhaldhunga road being constructed under an eight-year programme by the Royal Nepalese Army from 2050 B.S. is targetted to be completed and handed over to the Department of Roads by the next fiscal year 2001/02.

Even though the Katari-Ghumri portion of the road opened today for two-way traffic is a fair weather motorable road, transport services will run during the rainy season also, it is stated.


RNA athlete sets record in hammer throw

Kathmandu, Sept. 26 (RSS): Shumsher Dal battalion stood first in the inter-battalion athletics meet held under the Royal Nepalese Army here recently.

Likewise, Shri Gorakh Bahadur battalion and Shri Jagdal battalion were declared second.

Chief of the Army Staff General Prajawalla Shumsher J. B. Rana gave away the shield, cash prizes and certificates to the winning battalions and medals and cash prizes to the winning athletes and teams.

General Rana also gave away prizes to senior athletics coach Nar Bahadur Shahi, trainer Baikuntha Manandhar, Sushil Narsingh Rana, Puspa Raj Ojha and Jit Bahadur K.C.

Tanka Bahadur Thapa Magar of Shri Purano Gorakh battalion was declared the best athlete of the meet.

He also set a new national record of 47.13 meters in the hammer throw event surpassing the previous record of 46.10 meters.


Armed men kill one in Siraha

Lahan, sept. 26 (RSS): A group of about 15 unidentified armed persons yesterday attacked the house of Kushum Prasad Ghimire, 56, at Fulbariya VDC ward no. 8 of Siraha district last night and killed him.

According to the district administration office, Ghimire was shot dead while four other persons including his wife were injured when they tried to resist the robbing of his house.

The injured are undergoing treatment at the Mirchaiya Health Centre.


‘Govt working to strengthen law, order situation’

Syangja, Sept. 26 (RSS): Minister of State for the Water Resources Ram Bahadur Gurung has said that the present government has been working sincerely for strengthening the law and order situation and intensifying the development and construction work in the country.

Giving directives to the activists of the Nepali Congress (NC) in Syangja district, Mr Gurung said that HMG had been giving top priority to rural electrification and disclosed that electricity would be supplied to the rural areas of the district after the completion of Kaligndaki ‘A’ hydro-electricity project.

Minister of State Gurung said that the NC activists should be able to face all kinds of problems of the nation and generate public opinion in favour of the nation, nationalism and democracy.

President of the NC Syangja district committee and MP Shankar Prasad Pandey presided.
