Uphold Norms, Values

DEPUTY Prime Minister and Minister for Home Ram Chandra Poudel said that His Majesty’s Government was always committed, capable and serious to maintain law and order, provide security to the people and consolidate democracy and development in the country. Addressing the media persons in his own office in Kathmandu the other day, Deputy Prime Minister Poudel said that as the Nepali Congress has a comfortable majority in parliament and the move of opposition parties that disrupted 19th session of parliament was undemocratic and unconstitutional. It is true that the present government of the Nepali Congress was popularly elected for five years, which has been seriously working to consolidate democratic polity and accelerate the pace of development in order to raise the people’s quality of life. But there are certain elements, which have been making their attempts to weaken and defame multi-party democracy through unconstitutional and violent methods. In such a situation, all people, who want democracy and development to take roots in the country, need to collectively counter the politics of violence. Nepalese people are peace loving by nature and violence is, indeed, against the general nature of the Nepalese people. Violence has already claimed more than 1600 lives in different parts of the country and property worth over 900 million rupees was damaged. Violence only breeds violence, which is not at the interest of the nation, people and democracy. However, the irresponsible activities, like the ones opposition parties showed in the 19th session of parliament by not allowing the parliamentary meetings to take place, only encourage and support those who are active to weaken and sabotage democracy. In parliamentary democracy, parliament is the supreme forum of people where people’s elected representatives debate and discuss issues and problems of the people and the nation. The disruption of parliament and violation of parliamentary decorum, norms and values weaken parliament, and parliamentary democracy. If democracy is weakened it is not only the Nepali Congress but also all the political parties, people and the nation that would be the loser. It is the democracy that protects the right to express one’s views and dissent and carry out their political activities. But irresponsible acts in the name of exercising democratic rights only benefit the extreme rightist and extreme leftist elements which active against the present multi-party democracy. Against this background, all political parties that believe in the present constitution and multi-party political system must work together to foil anti-democratic elements and violence and killing to safeguard democracy in the country. Therein lies the interest of the nation and the people.
