End The Row Over Sewerage Management The ancient city of Bhaktapur is marred by the chaotic sewerege system. Though the centre of the historically important city looks clean with no rubbish lying all around as often seen in the other cities of the Kathmandu Valley, the drainages are being poured directly into the river flowing near by. The polluted river, which now looks like a stinking drain, has given an ugly look to the entrance of the city famous for the typical pagoda temples. The municipality authority and the people want to manage the sewerage system in their own way and complain that the government is reluctant to hand it over to them. The tug of war has further worsened the situation causing much damage to tourism industry of this area. Therefore, it is high time that both the parties reached an understanding and hammered out a concrete solution to the problem. Sundar Kaji Pradhan Other story |
