Stop Discouraging Sugarcane Farmers

A news story headlined "Sugarcane loses its sweet" published in The Rising Nepal on April 18, 2001 caught my attention. The country has a vast potential of sugarcane production, which can make a significant contribution to the country’s sugar demand. And there are quite a good number of sugar factories in different parts of the Terai belt. But it is disheartening to know that the farmers have been discouraged to produce the sweet crops due to lack of proper incentives, which they had been enjoying previously. Nepal is more or less self dependent in sugar production, but this tendency will compel us to import sugar from other countries giving a serious setback to the country’s economy.
