'Amendment to Constitution will make weak PM'

Pokhara, Apr. 19 (RSS): Speaker Taranath Ranabhat has said that problems could be faced in confronting the Maoists if the political parties lying with the existing constitutional framework continues fighting with eachother.

Addressing a gathering organised by the NC Kaski district committee here today, Speaker Ranabhat said that the ruling and main opposition parties should end the present serious situation by bringing the Maoists for talks as soon as possible.

An amendment to the present Constitution would weaken the Prime Minister in the democratic system, Mr Ranabhat said, adding that the ruling as well as main opposition parties should play a responsible role in a democratic system for the welfare of the country.

Minister of State for Water Resources Benup Raj Prasai alleged that the CPN-UML had demanded the resignation of the Prime Minister with the objective weakening the parliamentary system.

Vice-president of NC Kaski district committee Yagya Bahadur Thapa informed about the actual situation in the district.

Speaker Taranath Ranabhat, speaking at a meet the press programme organised by the Reporters' Club, Kaski today, expressed confidence that the present stalemate could be ended if the main opposition party held talks with the government.

Mr Ranabhat said that all responsible parties should remain alert for the welfare of the country and people as the forthcoming session of parliament would provide a new vigour to the country.

At the function chaired by the club's district president Raj Bahadur Gurung, senior journalist Madhav Sharma also expressed his views.
