Nepal’s Postal Service Moving At Snail’s Pace

When I read a news story headlined "Letters take 15 months to reach Kathmandu from Hetauda" (TRN, 21 April 2001), I could sense the pathetic condition of the country’s postal system. What is more surprising is that the letters in question are not ordinary letters of common citizens but those sent to the head office of the state controlled Agricultural Development Bank by its Palung sub-branch. Some time ago, I too sent several letters to this daily from my home town Janakpur raising some important issues affecting the common life today. But non of them have been published so far. Now I doubt that my letters too became the victim of the Nepalese postal service, which seems to be moving at a snail’s pace, as shown by the present case.
